Amazon.com essential recording: Elmer Bernstein, among the greatest of the golden age film composers, has lamented that there's not enough "artistry" in soundtracks today. He abhors the pop hit collections that pass for movie music albums, and the man's got a point. Perhaps he'd go for Horner's score to Phil Alden Robinson and W. P. Kinsella's fairytale ode to fathers, sons, and baseball. It's as evocative as the film itself, a shimmering corn field or a late-afternoon fly ball in every note. It's warm ("The Cornfield" is sweet, subtle, heartbreaking--like an echo, really), fun ("Old Ball Players" recalls Randy Newman's Ragtime score), and stirring ("The Place Where Dreams Come True" doesn't need a father-and-son game of catch to move you). A gem. No, a diamond! --Robert Wilonsky
Field Of Dreams CD Everything I could have asked for and more! Mr. Horner's work on this film captures the significance of the moment in every scene!! I could not be happier with the outcome!!!
Love the CD I've always loved this soundtrack and finally found it for a nice price on Amazon.
This soundtrack is one of Horner's most original and is different from much of his other work. It simultaneously conveys the longing, intellect, and wonder of the movie.
my favorite This has to be my favorite score or soundtrack of all time. Wow!... i can't explain what this score does to me, but it's something akin to a magical feeling. Like old nestalgic christmas memory from childhood. i don't know if the emotions are evoked from what's happening on screen or from some external factors. These melodies make me feel like i'm connected to everyone and everything at some very basic level. This score somehow conveys what it truly means to be human and that the connections we make in life transcend and can never be broken. Some of the most beautiful, heartfelt music i've ever heard. am i overdoing it?
Probably one of the best soundtracks ever! God the score to this movie makes me cry everytime I listen to it and even the movie makes me cry also. Field of Dreams is such a classic!
Sweet Sorrow I've watched a boatload of films in my 49 years and heard countless film scores...but this is the cream of the crop (no pun intended). James Horner captures perfectly the ache and longing for the slowing of time's relentless march forward. "The Drive Home" is like an audio companion for all the years that have melted into the ether. I've been reduced to tears by this music and it's never far from the cd player. That speaks volumes, as I have over 2,000 discs...mostly rock. Horner's music stands tall with the film - and without. He should have won the Oscar that year. My father passed 12 years ago and this music is like having him back. I'm gushing - but the music is that good!
