Editorial Comments

Amazon.com:
In Hayao Miyazaki's magical Kiki's Delivery Service, a 13-year-old girl meets the world head on as she spends her first year soloing as an apprentice witch. Kiki (Kirsten Dunst) is still a little green and plenty headstrong, but also resourceful, imaginative, and determined. With her trusty wisp of a cat Jiji (a gently subdued Phil Hartman) by her side she's ready to take on the world, or at least the quaintly European seaside village she's chosen as her new home. Miyazaki's gentle rhythm and meandering narrative capture the easy pulse of real life (even if his subject is a girl flying high upon a broomstick) and charts the everyday struggles and growing pains of his plucky heroine with sensitivity and understanding. Beautifully detailed animation and the rich designs of the picture-postcard seaside town of red-tiled roofs and cobblestone streets only add to the sense of wonder. This charming animated fantasy is a wholesome, life-affirming picture that doesn't speak down to kids or up to adults. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 starsSo darn cute
Kiki's Delivery Service is a very good and cute movie for all ages. The animation and voice talent is very good (watched it in Japanese, but the English translation is pretty good as well). The movie is about Kiki, a witch in training, who moves away from home in order to train. She reaches a pretty big city where she meets people that help her throughout the movie and also sets up a delivery service. Kiki deals with the challenges of the delivery service, making friends and dealing with her magic. The movie was really cute, but I found the ending too abrupt. Overall, it was good.

3 out of 5 starsA solid entry to Miyazaki's legacy.
I don't consider this to be up to Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli standards, but it's also not the worst thing they've produced. Just so you know where I stand, it's better than Castle in The Sky, but not as good as Mononoke, Nausicaa, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, or Totoro. That being said, it's still a good movie that's fun to watch. It can move kind of slow and some of the English voice work is poorly done, but it still has the fantastic art and that feeling that something special was put into the film's development that you get when you watch a Miyazaki film. If you haven't seen it yet, I'd recommend checking it out.

5 out of 5 starsThis film delivers! (Volume 1: Part 5)
Enter a world where witches are kind, but their job can be pretty hard. 'Kiki's Delivery Service' introduces Kiki, a 13 year old witch that is ready to begin her right of passage by going out into the world to find a town that needs a witch to be it's guide. Excited to go she comes across this big bustling city by the sea and encounters more than she bargened for. Not any monsters or evil sorcerers, but life. Figuring out what her purpose in life must be she learns about earning money, why boys can be so strange and what it really takes to be lady. She should be careful because when you grow up to might start to lose the things that you love. Only by creating the perfect balance can you truly live life to the fullest.

'Kiki's Delivery Service' is such a delight. A perfect blend of story book fantasy and realism. The characters are so much fun to watch on screen especially Gigi the cat voiced in english by the late Phil Hartman. It's a family film that adults will like just as much as kids. I don't know what it is about Hayao Miyazaki, but he always knows how to deliver a great time with his films.

5 out of 5 starsA delightful adventure
This is one of Miyazaki's best. He combines his love for exotic moving landscapes that are a gorgeous visual feast. As well as lovely imagery this movie has a story about the coming of age of a young witch who must grow up, and most importantly gather her courage to be a strong young woman. This movie is truly something that all young girls should watch. Its right up there with the classic Disney movies: Ariel, Lady & the Tramp, Beauty & the Beast...This is something you should definitely not miss out.

5 out of 5 starsAnother Winner
Wonderful, whimsical....absolutely beautiful story. I has the same Miyazaki heart and soul that we have already seen in Spirited Away, but this time the story is about a young witch who is looking for her place in the world. Really lovely story telling.
