Description: Edward James Olmos's Oscar-nominated performance energizes this true-life story of a Los Angeles high school teacher who drives his students on to excellence at calculus.
Amazon.com: Based on a true story, this inspiring American Playhouse production stars Edward James Olmos as a high school teacher who motivated a class full of East L.A. barrio kids to care enough about mathematics to pass an Advanced Placement Calculus Test. Not exactly a variation of To Sir, With Love, the film concerns itself with assumptions and biases held by mainstream authorities about disadvantaged kids, and Olmos's efforts to keep his students coolheaded enough to prove them wrong. Olmos, virtually unrecognizable as the pudgy, balding instructor, gives a career performance in this fine piece directed by Ramón Menéndez, and written by the director and Tom Musca. --Tom Keogh
Stand and Deliver Excellent production with a wonderful cast. I am a school administrator, so what was especially resonant for me was the realism of the school tone especially the weariness of teachers and surliness of students. Olmos' performance is terrific: vivid, animated, and compelling.
stand and deliver This was a great movie. I had to have this for a leadership class where we identified the leadership styles of the teacher, principal and the department head.
A Top Five Favorite of Mine This movie got me through nursing school. I was the single mom of two children and had to work full-time while I was in school. I almost quit a couple of times.
Whenever I felt discouraged, I would watch this movie again and draw fresh strength from it. I just bought it for my daughter...because she starts nursing school this month.
Many thanks to everyone who was involved with making this film!
An old favorite. Stand and Deliver starring Edward James Olmos and Lou Diamond Philips is based on a true story. Olmos gives the performance of his career, he is absolutely brilliant as an inspriational teacher. All these student/teacher films have the same formula, troubled but gifted students who need a little push thanks to a supportive and focused teacher, but this film actually carries off the message really well, and under-rated gem. EXCELLENT INSPIRATIONAL STORY! I'm a sucker for these types of films, if they're done right! Stand and Deliver is one of them that is done right! Winning performances all around, but Edward James Olmos really stands out as the teacher with a special gift for motivating his students. I rate this film 4 1/2 stars with my only gripe being that the movie doesn't really show Olmos winning his students over....they just seem to fall in line immediately. This is available on a double feature with 'Lean on me', another true story about a similar situation.
