Product Description: From Brian Wood (Demo, DMZ, Northlanders) and Ryan Kelly (Lucifer, American Virgin) comes Local, a collection of twelve interconnected short stories. Crossing genres as it crosses the country, Local examines Megan McKeenan, a young woman who sets off from Portland, OR with nothing but a backpack and a bad case of wanderlust. Each emotional vignette is a self-contained story that represents one year in the life of this young vagabond as she struggles to find a place to call home, both physically and spiritually. Set in twelve real life cities across North America, this deluxe hardcover edition collects for the first time the entire critically acclaimed series.
GORGEOUS COMIC! This TPB of Local is truly for the collector. It's nicely bound, heavy duty, and overall just perfect. The story itself is even better. The epitome of an indie comic. Great black and white art. Highly recommended for those that are sick of super heroes.
Great Journey This book takes the reader on an emotional journey. For the longest time I didn't think the main character was compelling but the end makes up for everything. Simply beautiful.
I didn't get it. I didn't get it--to the point that I went to a couple of message boards and asked what was up and then came here to see what other people said. And having seen what the folks have said... I still don't get it. Maybe I'm getting old.
Seriously, let me save you some trouble: Megan moves around a lot. She can't make her relationships last and ultimately blames it on her parents. Honestly, if you read indies, that is pretty much the MOST tired story in the business. We're spared the story of the time she got in on with the high school football jock who then never called her afterwards, but other than that, we've pretty much got all the usual 20-something "I can't/won't grow up" cliches.
*sigh*
Anywho, the art is nice. It's not better than ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN or anything, but it's very good, especially for a B&W indie. That said, I liked THE COURIERS way, way, way more, and I thought SUPERMARKET had more to say that's relevant to our times.
Local One the best graphic novels I've bought this year, great design, printing and most of all story and art. If you are a fan of indy comics it's worth having it in your collection.
Brian Wood never disappoints This collection is just spectacular. Brian Wood's comics are always amazing, and this hardbound edition just accentuates this fantastic series. Local is fantastically written and beautifully illustrated. You don't have to be a comic nerd to love Local, and this collection is a great diving in point for more mellow, alt comics. Even if you've already read Local, this is worth picking up as a keepsake.
Also, if you like Local, check out Brian Wood's earlier comic series, Demo.
