Product Description: "What is Shadowline? It is the place where things meet: light and shadows, hope and despair, good and evil. It is, to me, the most interesting place to hunt for stories." So begins this stunningly realized and beautifully rendered new work from master storyteller and artist Iain McCaig. McCaig is best known for his work as a principal designer on the three Star Wars prequels, including the iconic characters Queen Amidala and Darth Maul, as well as his work on many major motion pictures, television, and video games. His work can be seen in such acclaimed films as Terminator 2, Hook, Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula, Interview with a Vampire, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Shadowline presents a stunning portfolio of more than two decades of McCaig's masterful concept designs and storyboards, cover art and illustrations, as well as his private sketchbooks and personal paintings, all woven together within the confines of an engrossing, otherworldly tale.
"I've been telling stories for years, with paint, with words, with film and video cameras, and pixels on computer screens. I can't explain storytelling the way teachers explain math or history. To explain what I'm doing when I create would be like waking up while still dreaming. We are all storytellers night after night, for even the most inartistic of us can still dream like masters." -Iain McCaig
"Iain McCaig's characters arrive on the page fully formed, their life stories expressed through every beautiful pencil stroke, from the lightest fairy tales to the darkest nightmares." -Doug Chiang, Academy Award-winning designer of Terminator 2, The Mask, Attack of the Clones, and The Phantom Menace
must have for anyone that likes character art ^ This book is filled with character design and just awesomeness. A must have for anyone who likes to draw characters, etc. I especially like the small lesson pamphlets , its a great book.
MASTERPIECE of the highest order!! ^ I am re-posting this from a response I wrote to the 1 star slam of this incredible book. I decided to post it as a review to have it count in the ratings.
You absolutely HAVE to be kidding! Why do I get the feeling this person would be mesmerized by the finger paintings of preschoolers? Touchy-feely?? New age?? It is PURE fantasy art and is jammed FULL of some of the most fabulous conceptual art in the business. This reviewer is artistically clueless. I am a professional freelance, commercial and conceptual artist of 35 years. I have a massive library full of art books and this is by far one of my favorites. It is put together beautifully with a wonderful blend of thumbnails and finished full color art. Conceptual art from films is one of my passions and McCaig is one of the best in the industry. If you want to miss a marvelous journey into this genre, by all means take this person's ridiculous advice and pass it up. It was worth every penny and then some. There should be nothing less than five stars across the board on this one.
Note to those who do not understand thumbnails... they are the skeletons upon which all things wonderful are built. They hold the excitement and the rawness of the work. Many times the final has lost the urgency and inspiration the thumbnail holds. I find that anyone who labels sketches as filler and irrelevant has NO understanding of art. They are the foundation and to leave them out would be absurd.
Again, a STUNNING book! To say it was inspirational to me as a fellow artist would be a gross understatement. Thanks Iain McCaig for sharing your gift with us!
Fantasy art? Not fantastic. ^ A very overpriced book for so little artwork. The artwork included here is a mish-mash of uninspired ramblings and unfinished ideas. Very "new age" artwork, which in most cases means touchy-feely artwork rendered to death with very few real ideas anyone could relate to behind it. Reminds me of hippy tie-dyed artwork, or bored new-aged housewife artwork. It's labeld as "fantasy art," but there's not much fantastic about this book. Pass.
Inspirational ^ As an aspiring artist myself I find this book to be extra inspirational! It has not only awesome art, but story to it as well! I was taken aback by this book, I personally have never encountered an "art of" book quite like this. This is a must buy in my eyes.
Shadowline: The Art of Iain McCaig ^ I'm a huge fan of Iain McCaig, after discovering his work in The Art of Star Wars: Episode I book. I've kept an eye out for more of his work and Shadowline has delivered. I'll admit it's a bit pricey but worth it with loads of conceptual drawings, sketches and behind the scenes stories. I'm sure this book will soon become a collectors item.
