Amazon.com Review: Congratulations, you're expecting a baby! What you may not be expecting is all of the requisite gear you "need" to look after your dear bundle. Fear not. Denise and Alan Fields, authors of Bridal Bargains, are here to tell you what's super and what's silly, and how to find it at the best price. You'll learn all about how (and where) to shop for a crib and dresser (including how to get European styling at reasonable prices), what you need in bedding and what can be skipped (a hint: no baby requires the $200 quilt!), which clothing brands are safest and least expensive, and how to shop for monitors, toys, car seats, strollers, books, videos, and more. The authors have field-tested every major brand (and several of the minor ones), and they provide star ratings and annotations at the end of every chapter. A helpful feature in each chapter called "Wastes of Money" will steer you away from $35 Baby Air Jordans and frilly diaper stackers that match your bedding. If that's not enough, they offer a money-back guarantee: If the book doesn't save you at least $250 in baby expenses, they'll refund the price of the book. Well researched and written in a witty and comfortable tone, Baby Bargains should be required reading for every safety- and money-conscious parent-to-be. --Rebecca A. Staffel
Another set of overbearing opinions... As a first time mom-to-be, I'm already being inundated by opinions on what is "right" and "wrong" for every aspect of pregnancy, infant care, etc. A friend loaned me an older edition of this book...boy am I glad I didn't spend money on it! I realize that the authors are of course giving their opinions and that's why you have bought the book. However, it seems that every time I read a new chapter it angers me more and more. As other reviewers have mentioned, the authors discourage getting stuff second hand or as hand-me-downs from friends (hardly a bargain!). The advice seems contradictory to say the least! For people who are so against the baby industry driving consumption, they seem to encourage everyone to consume as much new as possible!
Book Review Excellent Product! I ordered it when I was about 30 weeks pregnant and I wish I would have ordered it much earlier on. It provides great information on all the products that are out there that we need for baby. I would rec getting this book way before you start buying items-like around 20 weeks. It talks about the pros and cons of each product to help you decide on whats best for you. It mentions bedding, strollers, cribs, etc, and even gives an opinion on the amount of clothes and diapers you will need. Great investment for a first time mom!!!
Mother's (And Mother's To Be) Little Helper In these times it has become a bit more of a concern to be able to work within budgets and cut some costs when needed. And with a baby on the way, budgets get a bit tighter and so do concerns.
There are many good ideas in this book, though some of them are a bit more common sense, but that does not really bother me much because I like having an overview and things to think about even if I miss it.
Some have said the book is a bit wordy and detailed, and to some degree it is, but again due to the subject matter that is something that I do not mind.
Use this book as a general guide/checklist/things to think about and it will be wortwhile no matter what. The one thing to keep in mind is you do not have to do all the things in the book, so if you are thinking about a purchase based on the book, it is okay to stop and think about it a bit before spending the money. You can even ask others for their thoughts before opening the wallet, especially since the idea is to try to be financially smart about things.
But even with that, there are enough "I never thought of that" before to make this book a good purchase.
Yeah! As a first time mother, this advice was indispensable. I didn't take all of Baby Bargain's advice, but the book served as a great guide while sifting through mounds of "baby stuff." Unfortunately when I purchased the book, the Kindle edition was not available. I'm almost considering buying it again on Kindle to keep with me while I shop!
Love it!
Great Tool for Parents! I highly recommend this book to new parents! Its been very useful by helping us determine our necessary baby gear vs. the additional baby fluff that just isn't necessary or could be harmful. The book also helps guide you to the best manufacturers for features, quality, customer service and costs and provides a summary after each chapter for Good, Better and Best.
