Read the most critical reviews... Ignore them and buy the comic Yes, you could wait for the one in colour. Yes, it has cheap binding, the spine of which may break if you are not careful. Yes, it has thin paper and sometimes you can see through to the other side of the sheet.
But buy and read it nonetheless. I had never read bone before. I only bought it because of the reviews on Amazon. I wasn't disappointed at all. It is an engrossing tale, that I finished in two days flat (Imagine 1300 pages of comics) during the work week.
There is social commentary, and it is a fairy tale setting and there is the sunset...
If you like comics, you will like this.
PS: To the one reviewer who said, he was 22 and he was too old for this. I'm 29 and thoroughly enjoyed the comic.
So what is there to add in a review that hasn't been said? ok. Everyone has basically said the plot and the reasons to buy this. So what do i have to add? Just say yes. Get it, read it. You won't want to put it down, it's that good. It's not too cartoony to feel like you're a dork reading it. It deserves to get made into either a cartoon series or a bunch of movies. They already have 3 games out for it that you can get from www.telltalegames.com . They're adventure games if you know what those are. NO killing. Just find objects talk to people, interact, and figure out what to do to get past puzzles and whatnot. A little arcade mode type stuff but if you die too much they let you just skip it, cause they're THAT nice. So read the book, play the games and feel like you're part of something special for a little while. Oh and not having this in your collection and considering yourself a comic fan is like not having read burroughs and consider yourself up on all the beat poets... or not having heard led zepplin and saying your an expert on classic rock. or having never seen the simpsons and consider yourself a true blue blooded american.
Great Book I've always been fond of this series, especially back when Bone used to feature in Disney Adventures Magazine (albeit in a censored format). Anyway, this is a very good edition, quality pages and all that fun stuff.
On a sidenote, Amazon accidentally sent me a box with no book contained therein (oops!), so they sent me another one via 2 day shipping completely free of Charge. That's what I call Customer Service!
Great Stuff After buying two, and then two more, BONE books for my kids for the holidays, and watching them both devour the stories, I started looking to complete the set. Unfortunately, of the 9 color compilation books, several (particularly in the latter going) are quite hard to find. So... this.
PROS: You get the whole incredible story, start to finish. Good times had by all. Wonderful art, great storytelling and humor.
CONS: At 1332 pages plus a couple, it's not much smaller than a cinderblock, and hernias are a potential factor in carrying it around. Plus (and not to sound heretical) I was disappointed to find that it is NOT IN COLOR - something I didn't know when ordering it. Nothing against the artwork, but the coloring in the individual books is so wonderful that it does make things feel more complete as an experience. However, it didn't seem to affect my kids. Plus if it WERE in color, you'd likely be looking at a 50% higher pricetag or more.
A must have I bought all BONE comics...here in Italy were published by three different editor..in more than 15 year!!! Once finished, I've seen this edition. Now I have a BIG BOOK with the whole story on it, in a format which remember "Lords of the rings". GH!
