John Carter of Mars Vol. 6: John Carter & the Giants of Mars and Skeleton Men of Jupiter (Classics Science Fiction: John Carter of Mars)
Product Description: John Carter of Mars Volume Six: John Carter & the Giants of Mars and Skeleton Men of Jupiter Strange adventures on Mars and Jupiter In this final book of the John Carter of Mars series from Leonaur, we once again join the Warlord of Mars himself in an exciting adventure-the tenth-entitled The Giants of Mars. All the Edgar Rice Burroughs hallmarks are include, to satisfy his legions of fans: giant rats, tree reptiles and evil rivals for power and love on the exotic planet Barsoom-our Mars. John Carter's mate, Dejah Thoris, is once again abducted as a prelude to a rip-roaring, roller-coaster ride of fantastic fiction. After battling the Synthetic Men, John Carter hopes for peace, but looses his spouse again-to the Skeleton Men of Jupiter. Both the Prince and Princess of Helium are rocketed away to that distant world, and here John Carter must embark upon one of his most unusual adventures ever.
Super Reader The last of John Carter of Mars, in two longish stories as he even expands his planetary repertoire and provides a role model for He-Man.
When you are a megalomaniac supervillain type that wants to take over the world, and a Synthetic Man to boot, what would you do if you had a whole bunch of Martian criminals, and a whole lot of white apes?
Yep, you guessed it. Mass brain transplants!
With the boss' fleet away, John Carter and Tars Tarkas have a pretty serious problem in Helium.
So, time to attack is pretty standard John Carter thinking. A bit more lateral is him coming up with a rat parachute brigade as reinforcements.
Appropriately whacky, this one.

The ever modest Earth hero John Carter : "I had not the slightest doubt of my ability to find Zanor. Perhaps it is because I am always so sure of myself that I so often accomplish the seemingly impossible."
Going to need some of that in this adventure :
"They had thrown me face down upon the pavement and trussed my wrists behind my back. Then they jerked me roughly to my feet. Now, for the first time, I obtained a fairly good sight of my captors. I was appalled. I could not believe my own eyes. These things were not men. They were human skeletons! Black eye sockets looked out from grinning skulls. Bony, skeletal fingers grasped my arms. It seemed to me that I could see every bone in each body. Yet the things were alive! "
Even worse, they are taking him to Sasoom. Or Jupiter as we might call it.
You, of course, wouldn't put it past these dastardly Morgor blokes to kidnap Dejah Thoris as an additional hostage to go along with the one they took from Carter's captor.

Rip-roaring Tales of Adventure! This was my introduction to the John Carter of Mars (I still live!) series of adventure Sci-Fi when I was a teen. Prior to this I had only read the first Tarzan book from ERB.
My father was a newspaper editor and he received new publications to read/review. This set of two final tales was one he brought home and gave to me when it first was republished by Ballentine books.
I devoured these two as a teen and was hooked. I subsequently bought all of the Mars/Barsoom series, considered one of ERB's best series. I also wound up reading the Pelucidar series which takes place at the center of the earth.
Although not the best of the Martian series, this combination of two short novellas was my introduction to it - hence my fondness for these two.
I am glad for these nice hard-cover editions from Leonaur. There are some typos but the editions say they preserve the original spellings so perhaps that's the case. I've purchased hardcovers of these Leonur editions of the Martian and Pellucidar series and plan to enjoy them all over again. Thanks for re-publishing them!
Some of my favorites of the Martian series were: the first two - A Princess of Mars and The Gods of Mars which form a single tale, A Fighting Man of Mars (my favorite), and Synthetic Men of Mars. Suspend some disbelief, sit back and journey to Mars where noble red men and beautiful red pricesses battle against evil, and also to the center of the earth (Pellucidar).
These ERB tales continue in the vein of Jules Verne but are much more immeditate and satisfying as adventure tales. For example, Verne spent hundreds of pages getting to the center of the earth, found little, and then they left. ERB will get you there in a bore machine in a few pages, and leave you there to explore a land filled with primitive men and women, fierce animals and an amazing landscape to explore.
Leonaur Ltd. is publishing the definitive Edgar Rice Burroughs 21st century editions. Leonaur Ltd. is publishing the definitive Edgar Rice Burroughs 21st century editions. These usually contain 2 books of the different ERB major series in order - thus far John Carter, Pellucidar, and Carson of Venus. In the future, possibly Tarzan! These books are handsome and my rating is mainly based on this - the ERB fan knows best about the rest of it. This volume contains the 11th and last John Carter of Mars book. It actually is 2 short novels, one of which was actually written by one of Burroughs' sons at ERB's request. To the last book the John Carter series mantained a high standard of quality.
