Leonaur's Carson of Venus 2 contains two more classic scientific romances written with all the magical pace and verve we have come to expect from this master storyteller.
Great Book- Bad Copy While the story itself lived up to Burroughs fame, the copy had many grammatical errors that were very annoying, making a smooth read difficult. I have bought from these sellers before and not had at least as much of a problem, but this particular one had quite a few problems. Still, for the price of the Burroughs book, not a bad buy overall.
A decent book and good value too Unlike the reviewer C. Miller I failed to find any double ll words with double ffs instead. There may be the odd stray punctuation mark, but there has never been a book printed that does not have some typos. Basically a decent book, well up to par for ERB, and good value too!
Great Story, Very Poor Presentation The classic stories in this volume get 5 stars, but the inexcusably poor presentation gives this edition much less. This was the first book produced by publisher Leonaur Ltd. that I have purchased, and it will be my last. Unfortunately, the book is filled with mis-spellings and grammatical errors throughout.
Whole sections of the book feature spelling issues, like words ending in "ll" being spelled with "ff" instead. For example, "well, fell, sell" would appear as "weff, feff, seff". Another annoying pattern is reversed quotation marks, and quotation marks out of place. And then there are the period marks in the middle of sentences...
There's just no excuse for this kind of presentation. I have previously purchased the University of Nebraska Press editions of Burroughs books, which I highly recommend. The Nebraska Press books feature full color artwork front and back, insightful forwards by leading authors, a much higher quality paper, and frequently use interior illustrations. Unfortunately, they do not currently have either of the books contained in this volume in print (they do have the first 2 Venus stories). The Leonaur book has no interior illustrations, and features only basic cover designs.
$15 is bad enough for a book of this quality, so I'm glad I didn't invest in the hardcover edition of this Leonaur book.
Leonaur Ltd. is publishing the definitive Edgar Rice Burroughs 21st century editions. Leonaur Ltd. is publishing the definitive Edgar Rice Burroughs 21st century editions. These usually contain 2 books of the different ERB major series in order - thus far John Carter, Pellucidar, and Carson of Venus. In the future, possibly Tarzan! These books are handsome and my rating is mainly based on this - the ERB fan knows best about the rest of it. This volume contains the 3rd and 4th Carson of Venus books. As I mentioned elsewhere, this is not ERB's best work nor best series but is still fun. And these Leonaru Limited editions rock! A must buy.
