Product Description: Following a renowned writer like Roy Thomas was no easy task, but J.M. DeMatteis (Justice League) found himself fit for the job when he became Conan the Barbarian's next regular writer with Conan #118! This volume continues the period when DeMatteis worked with legendary artist John Buscema, collecting five of their regular series issues, as well as Conan Annual #4 and #5, which were created by Roy Thomas, John Buscema, and Ernie Chan! Enjoy the continuing story lines, while getting a look at an older Conan's fight for his throne and queen in the unbeatable Thomas/Buscema/Chan Conan Annual collaborations: "The Return of the Conqueror" and "Bride of the Conqueror!"
At least It was cheap I have to say that this must have been a low point for Conan the barbarian comic, The writing is different than Roy Thomas's conan, it's the dialog in which conan speaks, he just sounds different. J.M.DeMatteis is an accomplished writer, no doubt. But here, I think he is he is out of his element, maybe he pulls it together in the next vol, I do not have the vol previous to this vol. John Buscema is not up to his ussual greatness, the art is waning, J.M. Demattheis talks about his non relationship with Buscema in the Foreword, maybe that's why Buscema left. Bob Mcleod looks out of his element as well, He kind of ruins Buscema pencils for me. Will I pick up VOL.17? YES! Gil Kane takes over the art chores. Maybe he'll have more influence on the story plot, There are some good things about this Vol, the covers are included and annuals 4 & 5 are here aswell.
A great Series Again! Dark Horse is doing a great job with this reprint series. While the recoloring does not always do the John Buscema art full justice, it is usually much better than the 70's Marvel coloring. The stories adapted by Roy Thomas are as vibrant and thrilling as ever. Recommended.
