Disappointed I know everybody loves this book, but I don't and will explain why. In the beginning of the book, a couple of points are made. One of them is that he's done his job if you look at his pictures and feel emotionally connected. Another one is something like "this book will be helpful to photojournalist style shooting too". To me, it didn't really exceed on either level. I think the pictures look so forced and unnatural. I didn't really connect to any of them. There's so many rules to his pictures, it's just very technical rather than relaxed. This goes against a statement made that shooting should be the other way around in the book. It is mostly about studio shooting too, there really isn't anything else. And in the lightning section, the only style that's mentioned is the only one he uses! This book tells how to a create Monte Zuckerman portrait and only a Monte Zuckerman portrait. It won't give tips that work but aren't his style, and that's why I'm scoring it low. A good portrait photography handbook would be more rounded.
Portrait handbook This book is fairly good. It provides very specific recommendations on lighting and posing that are a useful place to start. Many books talk in generalities
He is adamant that the reader should stick with just two types of poses and lighting. You might not agree, but it does give one someplace to start.
Quality material presented well this is the first book I hav read on the subject of portraiture and, from what I can tell, it is a fine book. The author provides good tips that are practical, writes in an informal style and makes good use of his experience in the field. This is a good book and worthy of consideration for addition to a library of photo books.
Legendary Shooter... great book! Hey... Monte... what can I say? You wanna get a great start for how to make classic images that stand the test of time and make clients just love you and your work... heres your start. The book is great and goes into a little detail on a lot of areas. Get the book!
Monte's Approach In A Book Having studied with Monte, I looked forward to the release of this book. His philosophy and approach to taking portraits are nicely summarized. Samples of his work are also provided. Monte had the touch and the formula. By incorporating his formula into our work, we can also improve our portraits. Most of his images are not overworked in Photoshop. They are just posed and lit properly. His subjects are always presented in a way that tells something about them, and also pleases the viewer. Monte was solid in fundamentals, and he left them for us in this book.
