Product Description: An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe, causing the dead to rise and feed on the living. In a matter of months, society has crumbled: There is no government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV. Rick Grimes finds himself one of the few survivors in this terrifying future. A couple months ago he was a small town cop who had never fired a shot and only ever saw one dead body. Separated from his family, he must now sort through all the death and confusion to try and find his wife and son. In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally begin living.
Consider me hooked! If you're a fan of zombie lore, post-apocalyptic stories or just comics in general , Volume #1 of "The Walking Dead" is certainly a must buy and I'm still shaking my head in wonderment that I took so long to get started with this series!
Volume #1 is a compilation of the first 6 issues of Robert Kirkman's zombie comics series. The narrative is thrust forward at full speed within the first few pages and the setup of story, setting and characters is about as painless as can be expected for such a sprawling, epic storyline. I also enjoyed the art style utilized in this volume with its seemingly 'flat' standard comic book look meshed in with intricate illustrative background detail and its gloomy black and white tone. My only complaint about this book is the beginning moments of the story which seem cribbed straight from the film, "28 Days Later." If you can look past this one point (as i did) a great comic experience lies ahead!
The Pinnacle of Zombie Stories! I picked this book up randomly by instinct. I finished it the night I bought it, because It was amazing! Zombie stories usually aren't well done, and my exception is Snyder's Dawn of the Dead. This book, however, surpasses all of them, and now im begging for more blood.
Why is it "amazing" -Black and White. The artwork and mood of the black and white is unbeatable. If they make a film it has to be the same. -Rick. Awesome protagonist. I could read his dialogue all day. -Plot and Characters. The story is very original and offers a thought process from an author who extremely cares for the material. You must read the before notes. -Pacing. At first I was a little thrown-off by the skipped pieces of time, but they really are self-explanatory. Its more of a collaboration of events, rather than a word for word, second for second story. Beware, because this could turn you off or turn you on. For me it made an intriguing difference that I respected.
I wanted to start a new series. I got really lucky that I found this book. It may have mindless zombies on the cover, but the story is generated from the brain of a genius.
Holy @%#$ing @#$%! ...seriously ((((((DO NOT READ THE OTHER REVIEWS UNLESS YOU WANT THE PLOT SPOILED))))) I really don't think there is a way to describe the amount of talent that goes into this book without dropping some F-bombs. but I'll try... Speaking generally about the entire series so I don't give anything away... Lets just say that I honestly can't remember the last time words and images had this big of an impact on me. I work at a comic book store and I read everything. Honestly. My @$$ is kicked. This book has made the biggest impact on me than ANY other series I have read. YOU HAVE TO READ THE WHOLE THING. Kirman slows down the story from time to time but only if its necessary, and then pulls you right back in. You are in good hands. This book has EVERYTHING! If this review is the one that talks you into reading the series... your welcome =o) trust me.. you will want to thank me later.
Best Damn Graphic Novel This the first issue in the best graphic novel series ever. Robert Kirkman created a series for the zombie fan. Not just a senseless book of gore but an account of the human condition under grave circumstances you cant help but get sucked in I would recommend this series to anyone. However this material isn't for the younger reader.
Great not just for genre fans, but anyone who likes a good story I'd heard lots about this book, but only recently picked it up when I found it at my local library.
Man, am I glad I did! This is so much more than a rehashing of the classic and modern zombie movies. It's a tightly drawn story with excellent art and characterization that has yet to let me down (and I'm into vol. 5).
This series has legs! It can go on and on as long as Kirkman keeps doing what he's doing.
Kirkman is also well known for his work writing Marvel Zombies, but this is far and away its superior. Instead of the slapstick gore-fest in the Marvel book, which has its charms, Walking Dead has serious legs. I, for one, have always imagined what happens after the first outbreak in the typical zombie movies, and this goes the distance to tell that tale. I can't get enough.
