When Art Matters More Than Story If you're looking for dialogue and complex story arcs, pick up a book by Brian Michael Bendis--Jinx or Goldfish are good places to start. However, if you're like me and prefer your comics with an emphasis on the artwork with story to a close second, then Pat Lee's work in Darkminds might be worth your time.
Obvious inspirations include Blade Runner (the setting), Akira (psionics, motorcycle gangs), Ghost in the Shell (cybernetic female lead). To say the plot is cliche'd would be an understatement, but disregarding the well-apparent influences it's an engaging mixture in terms of creating a deep sci-fi atmosphere. Dialogue is above average but definitely written in a way that makes one feel that they're processing cels of a full-length anime feature rather than a sequential comic book. But the art is definitely the strength--Pat Lee has a certain sense of the cinematic which somehow ascends traditional comic style, and it's much appreciated.
By making the art resemble something more of a anime film rather than a straight up comic, it helps give the plot weight through providing tremendous amounts of visual information.
