Todd Hagopian President/CEO Hagopian Institute Author of the brand new book - Self Publisher Coach: "Sell More Books In 30 Days" Edition
By Charles Jacobs, author of "The Writer Within You," a Best Book of the Year selection
Stacie Vander Pol's new book is a welcome tool for authors, particularly those newbies who have written a book, but haven't the slightest idea of where to go to have it published.
Instead of joining the naysayers who have condemned Publishing on Demand (POD) as a business venture, not a legitimate publishing venue. Stacie recognizes the huge value this technology offers an author by walking him/her through the varied pre-publication activities necessary to place a book on press.
POD also offers a writer whose budget is slim the opportunity to make only one relatively modest out-of-pocket expenditure up front. All expenses beyond that are taken from the income the book generates.
But Stacie goes far beyond her role as spokesperson for a much-maligned industry that long suffered from its earliest days when charlatans saw POD as an opportunity to make a fast buck at the expense of starry-eyed novice authors. She has evaluated 26 of the top POD companies, providing all of the relevant information an author needs to make a wise choice of publisher.
I have long been a proponent of POD as a gracious, welcoming introduction for newcomers who are overwhelmed by the complex maze of book publishing. With the knowledge and experience gained from their first POD book, these authors can move on to the rich world of indie publishers as they carve out their writing careers.
Stacie has done a great service to the industry with this guidebook. I have already incorporated it as one of the resources I recommend in my own books and speeches.
Informative but be careful and do your research ^ This 156 page book contains condensed abundant information about self publishing. If you have, like myself, little knowledge of this field, it will clear up anything you have questions about and lead you free to explore its recommendations. It somewhat fulfills what it sets out to do because of the author's knowledge of her subject and her ability to condense it into easy reading concisely constructed.
However, be warned. After doing extensive online research on several self publishing firms that received "Excellent" ratings by this author in many categories, I was most surprised to find that there are many reports of their being scams, and the descriptions of deceptive activities are very enlightening. I have to wonder if Ms. Vander Pol did research as well. If you're interested in self publishing, be sure to check out the ratings of these firms before you make your decision as to which one is best for you.
Kind of disillusioning is the author's description of how some writers have "review wars" with each other, meaning if you give me a bad review, watch out! When you publish, I will do likewise. Come on, children, grow up!
This book is a a beginner's "must have" for those who are considering self-publishing. But, again, take heed. Do your own research and save yourself some heartache.
Very, very helpful book for self-publishing authors ^ This book is straightforward and simple in presenting information that is invaluable to the author who plans to self-publish. Totally useful. Highly recommended!
Mediocre, but a good resource ^ First and foremost, this book should only be taken as a resource to evaluate the very basics of "self-publishing firms." It ranks them based of somewhat basic information (although the more important aspects) but lacks the nitty gritty to really make the sale to a specific firm. It will still require a lot of extra research to determine if a firm is a good fit. Nonetheless, there are many firms in here I never heard of and is a great book to gain more knowledge on the subject and point you in anew directions.
Unfortunately, it's not that solid. Don't get me wrong, if you are going to self-publish and NOT SELF PRINT (meaning you will pay another company to print your book, then allow them to take hefty profits from each sale) this is the book for you. I was surprised that the information on each firm was a little lacking. I would like to know the additional benefits of each firm - the added programs and packages they have. The percentage of successes they have had over the years and all the different numbers that go in/out of the company.
The additional information in this book is below par. Again, this book is to be used as a resource, so this complaint shouldn't deter you from buying the book. In the opening chapter, it states "this book assumes you have researched your options and have your reasons for using a self-publisher." True, but evaluations for each firm leaves much open to the imagination. Also, the last informational chapters are very basic. If you have done any reading on book marketing, you will find these chapters (amazon, cover design, finances, etc) to be very minimal and nothing new.
Final thought - it's a unique book that is a MUST BUY if you are for sure going to go the self-publishing firm route. If you aren't, most likely you will not gain from from reading it. It doesn't mention any options for self-printing - I think if they made another edition comparing the self-printing shops along with self-publishing, it would be a must have for anyone. In all, it's a good book, not great, and although not too beneficial for my taste, it is one of a kind and great for those looking for a good, simple reference.
