Need Tea Reviews ^ Ooh, ever since I read Harry Potter I've been intrigued by this whole Nicholas Flamel legend. So much so that I even wrote a paper about it. Now that there's a book series about it, I had to get my hands on it.
For the most part it was pretty interesting seeing how the author weaved history into his books. I liked his magic system and how each individual has their own unique smell and their own colored aura. It was also pretty fast paced so you probably won't get bored. Right from the first chapter it starts off with explosions and high speed chases, so it's got what you need right there.
Near the end he did/thought the most dumbest things. I mean, I get questioning the true motives of your would be savior/person that you're following but then your sister?! Right after she does something big in the exact opposite of what you were thinking? WHAT?
The writing is decent. It started off with a bang and then sort of tapered off by the first battle and became a lot more simplistic. It was more of a listing of events than an engrossing scene. Everything throughout this whole book takes place in just two days which is really unrealistic to me. I doubt people would be even standing if they were constantly attacked non-stop.
Not bad.
I LOVED IT..... did I mention I LOVED it? ^ I LOVED The Alchemyst SOOO MUCH!!!!!! I've already read The Magician.......... I absolutely ADORED it!!!!
What this book was... ^ This book was a total delight. Reading The Alchemyst was similar to watching the very first Indiana Jones movie...sort of sheer delight and awe and excitement. Josh and Sophie...quite ordinary twins...are suddenly thrust into an unknown world. This book had just about everything in it that could be imagined into a fantasy of this nature. It was sort of classic good against evil although sometimes I was a bit unsure of who was good and who was evil and often my ideas about that changed. It was a wonderful book to read. It was chasing and trying to be safe and then not being safe and always constant running running running. I hated when it ended but was delighted to pick up the second and third book in this series as I anxiously wait for the fourth. When I put the third book down after I finished it...I immediately raced to Michael Scott's website to find out how much longer I would have to wait to be in this adventure again. Trust me...I have already waited far too long.
The Magician (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel)
Fun, after a weird start..... ^ For some reason that I can't pinpoint, it took me a while (past half-way) to really feel IN to this book. One of the reasons: The author's note at the end was really helpful for framing the story-so why put it at the end? It doesn't give away any of the plot. I really would have liked to have read that before starting the book. In spite of the slow start of enthusiasm, I am very much looking forward to reading the next book.
A Perfect Fantasy for Boys and Reluctant Readers ^ Nicholas Flamel was the greatest alchemist of the Middle Ages. Records show he died in 1418. Yet his tomb is empty. Nicholas Flamel still lives! He discovered the elixir of life in the "Book of Abraham the Mage," the most powerful book that ever existed--that cannot end up in the wrong hands. But Dr. John Dee, another alchemist with evil plans, steals it. Only Flamel's friends, Josh and Sophie, have the power to retrieve it and save the world.
The Alchemyst is the perfect fantasy adventure novel for boys and reluctant readers. The story never becomes boring because there are so many unexpected twists and turns. It has everything from car chases and kidnappings to magicians and monsters. Fortunately, this New York Times bestseller is only the first in a great series. --Reviewed by Veronica L. Hernandez
