Product Description: It's not manga, it's Azumanga (and it's smart, fun and totally addictive)! Created by the iconoclastic Kiyohiko Azuma (hence the name), Azumanga Daioh is strongly character driven, telling the story of a group of high-school girls and their hilarious daily tribulations.
The pending 2004 release of the Azumanga Daioh anime (from ADV Films) already has anime excitement at a fever pitch! While fans wait, here's the manga that started it all.
Strong cross-promotion with the upcoming ADV Films anime release.
A hilarious high-school comedy: terrific characters with huge appeal to middle- and high-school age readers of both sexes!
Strongly episodic four-panel designs make this an outstanding introduction to the manga artform for new readers.
Published in authentic Japanese right-to-left format.
A legendary staple in Manga! Azumanga Daioh is a definite staple in manga. In fact, its one of the few titles that actually kickstarted my interest in manga graphic novels.
Loved throughout the world, Azumanga Daioh follows the day to day lives of six high school girls and their teachers. The characters are geniune and more than likely there is something you with probably identify with some of the characters.
Wonderfully Hilarious! I'll start off by saying that this is officially a "seinen", men's, manga, but I am a female college student and I loved it! My younger sister and my dad also enjoyed reading it, so the comedy works for all ages.
What makes this funny is the unique personalities of the characters and how they interact. This manga is in a four panel form, like a newspaper comic strip, so there isn't really a plot. You could open it anywhere and start reading.
Back to the characters: Chiyo-chan is a talented 10-year old high school student who is irresistibly cute, even as she tries to fit in with her older classmates. Sakaki is a tall, athletic, yet shy girl everyone thinks is cool. She secretly has a weakness for cute things like Chiyo-chan and cats, even though cats don't seem to like her back. Tomo is loud, energetic slacker who tries to compete with people way out of her league. Yomi is a smart, sensible girl who worries about her weight and is strangely Tomo's best friend. Ayumu, who is quickly nicknamed Osaka because she transferred from the area, is a slow, spacey girl who thinks in a very out-of-the-box way. She often daydreams about Chiyo-chan's pigtails flying/falling off/talking/etc. Kaorin is seen less often, but she has a huge crush on Sakaki.
The girls' teachers are just as crazy. Miss Yukari and Miss Kurosawa are like the adult versions of Tomo and Yumi. Miss Yukari is obnoxious and immature, and yet Miss Kurosawa still ends up buying her drinks. Mr. Kimura has a creepy obsession with high school girls and is usually seen with his mouth hanging open.
With characters like these, how could you not have fun? There are several running jokes in the series, like the cat who always attacks Sakaki, but they aren't overused.
Overall, a great book and a great series with offbeat humor that everyone can enjoy. I highly recommend it.
THE funniest manga series ever I don't like pointless things. At all. Pointless songs, pointless conversations... they just irk the heck out of me. Azumanga Daioh is the exception, though. Because, if you get down to it, Azumanga Daioh is truly pointless; it simply follows the every day lives of a group of high school friends. Volume 1 is where we really get to know everyone. There's Chiyo Mihama, aka Chiyo-chan, the smart 10-year old who's already in high school; there's Sakaki, the tough girl who has a soft spot for cute animals, especially cats (too bad the cats don't like her back!!); there's Tomo, the loud-mouthed slacker; there's Yomi, the studious one (also the one with the most common sense); and there's my favorite Azumanga Daioh character, Osaka (real name: Ayumu Kasuga), a transfer student with an unexplainable Brooklyn accent. Even the title is pointless; Azumanga is a combination of "manga" and the author's last name (Azuma), and Daioh is a reference to the Japanese manga magazine Dengeki Daioh, the magazine that Azumanga Daioh first appeared in. Make no mistake, though- never has something about nothing been so uproaringly funny. Get it- you will not regret it.
Had me laughing for hours. This is a nice, short series but the impact is has ont he reader is on par with series that have up to 20 volumes and even then some. I bought this on a whim since I heard the series was funny and I became a instant, die-hard fan.
Memorable characters, hilarious gags, outrageous puns, and a intresting gag-manga type format makes this series extremely worth it.
Just make sure you have your will ready cause you will die from laughter (hahaha that was a horrible pun).
I LOVE THIS SERIES!!! (and I'm a GIRL) I...LOVE...AZUMANGA DAIOH!!! It's stupid. It's nonsensical. It's random. And it's ultimatly hilarious. Guess what? THAT'S AZUMANGA DAIOH!!! It should be a classic. How can you NOT crack up?! I like the cast. Know why? Because most of them are stupid, yet hilarious, idiots. And...there's one child prodigy! I actually FINISHED this rather short series! If I can do it...so can you! It's worth it!!!
