Another engaging book by Donaldson, with Glitter on every page Princess Eliza is having her 7th birthday party when a wicked wizard comes flying through the window, he turns everyone into stone and says he is taking her away to his castle to work for him. A fairy godmother flutters in just in time to give her 7 chances to escape before the fairy godmother is turned to stone to.
Over the next seven days Princess Eliza 'changes her colour and changes her shape" to try to escape from working for the wizard (cleaning all the dried up food on his plates, or mending the holes in his socks made by his LONG toenails)
This is a lovely book, it is not in the same rhyming tradition as Donaldson seems to do with her mainly Axel Scheffler illustrated books, but is still very engaging and my girls were reciting whole pages of it within a couple of days (amd many reads later).
The book concentrates on colour - each day is a different colour, blue, yellow, orange, purple, green and so on, and there are also the days of the week, so there is a nice little lesson under the surface of this
Princess is a very smart cookie, and she ends up saving herself and still getting back to her own castle for cake.
