Book Description: Ray Palmer, The Atom, is missing! It's up to heroes Kyle Rayner, Donna Troy and Jason Todd to join forces as the Challengers of the Beyond and scour the multiverse for him, visiting several of DC's varied universes along the way.
Their search takes them to the Wildstorm Universe, the gender-reversing world where Superman and Batman are Superwoman and Batwoman, and the worlds seen in the the classic tales SUPERMAN: RED SON, BATMAN: GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT and more.
Where is Ray? This Countdown connected trade centers on the foursome of Jason Todd, Donna Troy, Kyle Raynor, and Bob the Monitor (what kind of name is that?!) searching the multiverse for the currently missing but imminently important Ray Palmer, who has gone into seclusion after the tragic events of Identity Crisis. Their expeditions to different Earths read more like a series of What If tales than a critical and cohesive enterprise, with unfortunately very little of importance actually happening. The entire book basically comes across as pointless filler, with the same status quo existing at its' conclusion as it was at its' beginning. Certain sojourns are intriguing, if not somewhat funny, specifically the issue involving the Joker and the Riddler family. Indeed the highlight of the entire trade is the witty and notable literary reference that is made involving a woman with multiple personalities named Eve, also cleverly christened Three-Face, who furthermore just happens to be the mother of Duela Dent, the daughter of this Earth's Joker. Regrettably other journeys, primarily the ones through the Earths of Red Rain and Gotham Gaslight, fail to shine when needed. The principal paucity of any resolution or closure combined with the appreciable absence of any chemistry or dynamism among the four protagonists are key factors that help conspire to make this yet another underachieving Countdown tie-in, a sad situation made worse considering how essential the need is for favorable support for this much maligned story.
