Johns knows GL better than anyone else and it shows How on Earth can Geoff Johns take one of the most convoluted histories in comics and making it make sense and making it thrilling all the while dropping seeds for payoffs 5 years down the line? I guess the simple answer is, he's an incredible writer. Throw terrific art work into it and you have a fantastic read!
This is how to do it Great comic book story, delivered with verve and aplomb. Unputdownable (yay, new word) and, by extension, unmissable.
A Hero Returns!! I did not write a review for this when it first came out and now I am glad I did not, as I got to see what was in store for Hal Jordan 2 years down the rode and how so much of it was set up in Rebirth. Geoff Johns has shown us WHY Green Lantern rocks!!! First of all Hal was the first Earthman inducted into the interstellar Police Force known as the Green Lantern Corps. He was a hero's hero. No Fear. Quick on his feet. Strong of will. One of the greatest of Green Lanterns. I always felt what DC did to him in the early 90s was a shame and a tragedy. Luckily others thought the same way and 10 years later we get Rebirth. This book puts Hal Jordan back in the spotlight with a Green Lantern Ring on his hand!! The story shows us WHY Hal Jordan is important, heck it shows us WHY ALL the Earth Green Lanterns are important. No one is cast aside in this story, so if you have your favorite GL and you are afraid they are mistreated, don't worry, they are still treated with respect and given their own unique status in the Corps. This story bring Hal full circle, from fear and evil, to redemption, to back to his roots as an officer of the Green Lantern Corps. The greatest thing about this story is how there are sooooo many subtle details thrown in that you would never think about UNTIL you started reading the Green Lantern series that started after this story (do yourself a favor and pick up those trades as well). Black Hand, Parallax, Sinestro, and Coast City are all picked up and used again after this and you get to see what happens to them all thanks to Rebirth. This story has a beginning, middle and end so there is no need to worry about a story that leaves you hanging, its all here and oh what a story it is!! A little about the art: Ethan Van Sciver is an amazing artist and quite frankly I can't imagine anyone else doing this story ever. He treats Green Lantern with respect and all the details and backgrounds are amazing. The characters have never looked so good. Pick this story up, you will not regret it!
Made me care about the green lanterns again... Art, plot, a great character brought back to the forefront of one of the most interesting groups of the DC universe - this book has it all. I had so much fun reading this... Batman comes out a little whiny - but this is not his story. Welcome back, Hal, it is good to see you... In the darkest night or the brightest day.
One of the best storylines from DC in years I became a fan of Hal Jordan by accident in the 90s when his Green Lantern became involved in the Reign of the Supermen storyline. Before that I had only seen him in cartoons and occasional appearances in other comics. But after the destruction of Coast City he became something al together different. Possibly fo the first time in comic book history a main stay hero became a villian. Many fans of Green Lantern were sorely disappointed when this occured. But I loved the whole idea of Parallax. Hal Jordan is only human after all. And every human has his/her breaking point. He went mad with fear & grief and decimated the Corps singlehandedly. For years afterwards he moved through the DC Universe trying with all his power to "set things right." Then along comes Geoff Johns and writes one of the most powerful stories seen in DC in years. He gives us the reason for the yellow weakness in the rings (something I am sure Lantern fas have pondered over since Hal first appeared). He brings Sinestro back with a fury. He reignites the Green Lantern Corps. And best of all he returns Hal Jordan, the Man Without Fear, to his glory as the greatest Green Lanter. Each issue is poweerful and with each page we learn more about the sentinels of the galaxy, the Green Lantern Corps. Far from being the penultimate storyline for Hal , Geoff uses this series to ressurect the power of the Green Lanterns and set us up for future storylines (The Sinestro Corps War and The Blackest Night). If you have ever been a fan of Hal Jordan and whether you liked his Parallax aspect or not, you will love Green Lantern:Rebirth.
