In one of humor's most familiar forms, the magazine parody is a staple of the National Lampoon. Rich in visual jokes and pop culture reference it's an easy and fun read. Culled from years of material the Magazine Rack includes great classics like the MAD magazine parody, Pethouse, and Playdead and new material like Consumed Reports – Weapons of Mass Destruction, Trophy Wife Magazine, and the Hollywood Retorter all perfectly constructed by our award winning team.
I found the sick jokes humorless I am generally a fan of the humor of National Lampoon and am capable of enjoying the sick joke. However, the "humor" in this book is so tasteless that it turned me off. It is meant to be a parody of popular magazines, but I didn't find the material funny at all. Some examples are:
*) Playdead - a collection of jokes about necrophilia, murder and gore. The "centerfold" features a dead woman in a hospital bed. *) Pethouse - a collection of material about pets. The photos are of a dog licking its' genitals and sniffing its' feces. *) Negligent mother - features an ad for a 5-day live-in diaper for a baby. *) Famine Circle - features ads for items such as "Die Rite Cola", and "Kill the Children Federation"
I found this book completely gross and unappealing.
M-I-A Wow! Twenty-three NatLampCo magazine parodies in one handy book. I've always worked in publishing so I loved their brilliant satires on consumer titles and I thought to have all these in one book would be a 'must have'...and I bought a copy. I've regretted it ever since.
Sure you get twenty-three titles but missing-in-action are pages and pages that appeared in the originals. I did a quick check of some magazines in this book and the number of pages in the original Lampoon (in brackets) Pethouse 5 (8) Ivory 5 (8) Playdead 10 (14) Old Ladies Home Journal 4 (8) Negligent Mother 4 (6) American Bride 7 (10) National Inspirer 6 (8) and I think it is safe to assume that most of the contents are minus something. As well as missing pages some of the originals have been re-arranged and the color looks like it has been scanned from the Lampoon pages rather than the original plates.
Pretty much a disaster but they did have the good grace to include the complete fifteen pages of the the stunning Mad parody. I only think this is worth buying if you want to get a flavor of the Lampoon when it was it its greatest (some of the book's contents are not from this period) otherwise its emasculated original pages don't do anyone a favor.
An awesome collection of the BEST of N.L. Too bad there's nothing like it on the stands every month now. Sarcastic, offensive, juvenile ... yet FUNNY. This collection of magazine parodies is a must for anyone with a sense of humor.
Not the real NatLamp Altough much of the content is from the classic National Lampoon, the edition is not as clever as the old mag used to be. All the time the editor says things like "this is not a real magazine" or "this is not a real quotation". Something is missed. Maybe the sense of humour itself.
