Amazon.com Review: Now that Bill Watterson has retired from drawing syndicated cartoons, the only way to get our Calvin and Hobbes fixes is through his book collections. The 10th Anniversary Book is particularly notable, because in addition to getting some of his most wonderful cartoons, we also gain a sense of Watterson as a person.
Approximately one-tenth of the book contains essays about matters great and small--from cartooning to life--and stories about the inspiration behind some of his greatest strips. Not surprisingly, Watterson shines through as a being of considerable integrity, and the cartoons gain in depth thanks to his commentary. And, of course, the cartoons in the other 90% of the book are alternately side-splitting hilarious or touching. Happy Anniversary, Bill, and good luck with whatever it is you are doing now!
Product Description: In November 1985, the magic of Calvin and Hobbes first appeared on the funny pages, introducing the world to a wondrous pair of friends. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of this distinguished partnership between a six-year-old boy and his (sometimes) stuffed tiger, Watterson has prepared a special book, which shares his thoughts on cartooning and is illustrated throughout with black-and-white and color cartoons.
10th Anniversary of Amazing! ^ This book is interesting and funny, anyone who is a fan of Calvin and Hobbes should buy this just to read Bill Watterson's comments. Love it!
Calvin and Hobbes! 'Nuff said! ^ The strips themselves are fun but the added commentary from Bill Watterson is icing on the cake. It helps understand the characters even more. A must for Calvin and Hobbes fans.
AWESOME SERVICE! ^ The product was worse shape then I was expecting but when I wrote to the seller I had great service! They were very apologetic that I did not received the item in expected condition and reimbursed me the whole amount! Now that's an awesome seller if you ask me. Not just from getting money back, but because of the email reply I got and how polite they were.
VINTAGE CALVIN AND HOBBES ^ All of the Calvin and Hobbes books are excellent, but this one is especially good in my opinion. Watterson provides commentary on the stories and characters in the strips, and also his travails and insights with the newspapers and his syndicate. I suspect that he gave up the newspapers as outlets because of these hassles. Anyway, Calvin and Hobbes is a national treasure. Calvin's mischievous antics and pranks border on evil at times, but then he and Hobbes have wonderful philosophical discussions.
Retrospectives in Greatness ^ As a precursor to the entire collection of "Calvin and Hobbes" strips, this is a great, affordable buy. It offers the best scripts representing each of the main characters, with additional commentary by Watterson. My only dillemma is that some of the strips were cut very short (the poem and the story of Uncle Max's visit being some examples). Still, this is a great collection presenting some of the best strips to represent each of the characters.
