Product Description: Left shaken at ground zero after the cataclysmic events of House M, Logan has no choice but to soldier on, as he's done so many times before - but has the burden now become too great? In his lifetime, Logan has been both a hero and a villain, a player and a pawn... but what is he now? Don't miss out on the beginning of an epic more than a century in the making! Collects Wolverine #36-40.
Boring Pretty boring and not worth the $12. The art wasn't bad, but it felt like the book was lacking substance. See if you can read this at your public library. If you're really into the whole pre-wolverine/weapon-x era, get the $14 hardcover comic by Windsor-Smith. The art is raw and the story is dark.
Little Origin and NO ENDING! Warning: There will be spoilers in this review, but don't worry; they just aren't that interesting.
Just finished this book and let me tell you it is everything that I dislike about comics today. First off, no where on the cover does it indicate that this is the first part of a series. YOU DO NOT GET A COMPLETE STORY! This defeats the strength of the concept of a "collection". What I like about trade paperbacks is that we get a long stretch of consecutive issues all collected neatly and a storyline that is told in its relative entirety. Not so here. In fact if I'm reading Amazon's reviews correctly you will need to shell out for another FOUR books to get the complete tale. (Truthfully, I have not read the reviews all that closely, I am not going to read this series any further.)
This is piracy of the worst kind, especially since, as others have already noted, NOTHING HAPPENS. This is little more than a long set-up that supposedly shocks us with an appearance by Bucky. There used to be a saying amongst the fans that nobody stays dead in comics, except Bucky. It was, in my opinion, a point of honor that Marvel would allow Bucky to stay dead. Oops.
This is a short story as well. I read this so quickly that I at first thought there must've been pages missing in my copy. After a quick re-read (That's two times through the entire volume all in a matter of 20 minutes) I realized that I was correct. The pages missing are THE REST OF THE STORY!
Nothing that they can do with this story will improve the Wolverine mystique. Marvel has decided that he will be a more interesting character if all the mystery surrounding him is revealed. I disagree. It is what drove me back to the character year after year, long after I had abandoned Marvels Merry mercenary society of long winded, interconnected and out of control continuity for the sake of a buck.
Someone commented that this is the riskiest editorial idea that Marvel has done. I disagree. It is a sure fire money maker, especially stretched out over four or more volumes. All the fans will want to get a hold of this "major Character development" in what is arguably the most interesting comics superhero ever. Sadly, Wolverine is just not very interesting here. Not even when he chews his own arm for nourishment. Yes, that really happens.
I'm certain there were all kinds of little in jokes to this story that I missed. For the long term, loyal fan this may be a rewarding experience, but they too will have to buy all the slim volumes in this series separately. But Marvel knows that they will and is banking, literally, on this fact.
Having read Wolverine from his first appearances on, I cannot recommend this volume and as such cannot recommend the series even though I have not and will not read any of the other books. Read the reviews and you will see that I am choosing the wiser course of not wasting my time.
What is Marvel doing that is good? The "Essential" series. For about $14 -$16 bucks you get a whole lot of story and I heartily recommend that the casual reader pick up any of the Wolverine volumes. They are what you want in Wolverine.
By the way, the plot device at the end of this story is to give Wolverine a samurai sword. He defeated a guy with a samurai sword at the beginning of this volume and HE HAS SWORDS THAT COME OUT OF HIS KNUCKLES! This story is that lame.
new twist on stuff people already knew some people think this is a horrible book. its not super great, but its not horrible either. alot of these stories put a new twist and perspective on old wolverine stories. (fyi: wolverine and captain america had history together BEFORE the winter soldier, duh!) and, no main characters were killed off in this story, so dont let other reviews fool you. its a little hard to follow, it took me a 2nd read to make sense of it, and i've been reading wolverine stories on and off since the late 80s.
Origins Fans Musta Have! Well, this is a very interesting saga of our favourite mutant. For those who are reading only ORIGINS and want to know some details about how that title began, this is a MUST-HAVE TPB.
Wolverine: Origins & Endings good bok grate conditong and delived on time...
