Amazon.com essential video: DeVito and Schwarzenegger as fraternal twin brothers? Hey, why not? This delightful 1988 comedy by Ivan Reitman--about genetically designed twin siblings who discover each other at the age of 35--works out just fine, thanks largely to great chemistry between the two stars. Despite a certain amount of rough action and tension, the film really gets a lift from the palpable innocence Reitman develops, and the female costars (Chloe Webb and Kelly Preston) bring some interesting texture of their own. This is a film that walked the tightrope of a high concept and completely succeeded. To see how easy it is to stumble in a similar situation, check out DeVito and Schwarzenegger in Reitman's Junior. The DVD release has a full-screen presentation, optional French and Spanish soundtracks, optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh
The New Odd Couple I remember seeing this movie at the theater - went with a friend who, I knew, had an odd sense of humor, so I was ready for just about anything. I wasn't ready for Louis DePalma meets the Terminator, though! The stop-you-in-your-tracks oddity of big, buff Arnold as the twin of altitudinally challenged, less than buff Danny was just the beginning.
Not a deep movie - certainly no "Brave New World" - but a really fun trip. My two youngest (teenage boys) loved this movie, even though it was recommended by Mom.
70th Birthday gift for a set of twins. I pasted the faces of the birthday boy and girl over Arnold and Danny. It was a great fun surprise.
A Timeless Classic This is such a great movie, but the dvd is really not too good. Like many other great older movies, the studio has not given this movie the proper dvd transfer that it diserves.
PLEASE RELEASE THIS DVD IN WIDESCREEN!!! Those of you at Universal Home Video, please please please release this great film in its original WIDESCREEN format, along with Kindergarten Cop! Both films deserve better than 10-year-old pan & scan transfers!
Could have been great You have to wonder what is going on in the minds of some of these Hollywood directors these days. The script is hilarious and the film company could have had a classic on their hands save for one fairly major quibble - the casting! Who in their right minds would believe that Arnold Schwartzenegger and Danny De Vito were twins. Apart from the lack of any physical resemblance they don't even have the same accent or dress the same most of the time. I have to admit it did rather detract from the film as far as I was concerned. I think they should have gone for the obvious choice and cast The Proclaimers instead.
