Editorial Comments

Amazon.com:
Pay no attention to the fact that Timecop is an insult to intelligent science fiction, and that it gradually succumbs to an acute case of the sillies. It is a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie, after all, so check your brain at the door and enjoy this action flick set in the year 2004. Van Damme plays an officer in the Time Enforcement Police, assigned to prevent criminals from traveling to the past with the intent of altering the future. Ron Silver plays the evil politician who plots to retrieve a stockpile of gold from the Civil War to finance his latest campaign. The film is clever to a point, and entertaining if you can ignore the dumb jokes and inconsistencies. Best of all, it's an above-average vehicle for Van Damme (relatively speaking), who gets to kick some villainous butt and share a few scenes with Mia Sara, who plays the Timecop's wife. As Van Damme fans can tell you, this is one of the action star's better movies. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 starsbought it used but its in excelent shape ^
I have always liked this movie so when I saw that the manufacture had discontinued it I thought that my only choice was to buy it used. The price was more than reasonable so I figured I wasn't out much if it wasn't in good shape. When I received it and watched it I was very pleasantly surprised that there was no skipping or any problems. I think I have always seen this movie on network TV, so I was surprised by a couple scenes with nudity. I looked away and pressed "FF" until it was over.

5 out of 5 starsTimecop ^
In the year 2004, time travel is a reality, and a new breed of criminal has emerged with it. Suddenly, it's possible to alter historical events, so the Time Enforcement Commission was formed to enforce a simple rule: No one goes back. But someone has broken that rule, and Max Walker is engaged in a fierce manhunt for a corrupt senator who has acquired the power to change history. A truly brilliant and thought provoking movie.

4 out of 5 starssecond chances at life . . . ^
Peter Hyams futuristic adventure Timecop (1994), is all about time travel and the bending reality. Based on a comic book, the film combines that interesting premise, with special effects, and decent action sequences, producing an entertaining storyline that holds together pretty well, if you are not overly critical.

In a career that has had its ups and downs, this is one of Jean-Claude Van Damme's highlights, starring as Max Walker an agent of the Time Enforcement Commission (TEC). Jean-Claude is in top form physically, and there's plenty of action, and in close fighting featuring his trademark fancy footwork. Ron Silver is Senator Aaron McComb, who is using time travel to raise funds for his presidential bid. While that premise is a bit lame, the time travel aspect allows for some interesting and unexpected twists, turns, and returns. Silver makes a pretty good villain, and Bruce McGill injects humor as Matuzak, the harried head of TEC.

Walker's life is destroyed, when his wife Melissa, played by Mia Sara, is killed in an explosion. Fortunately through the vehicle of time travel, Sara returns for more screen time, and some physically challenging action scenes. Gloria Ruben (ER) plays Walker's new partner, who makes a bad decision, but again because of time travel, also gets a second chance at life. The presence of both ladies, adds much to the enjoyment of the film.

Big things don't make sense, like travelling back to the past in a winged vehicle, arriving there without it, and then somehow returning in the same vehicle. The plot is cartoonish, but still fun. The special effects while somewhat dated, still hold up rather well, and with your brain in neutral, Timecop can be a cool fantasy adventure. Van Damme's acting is often maligned, but his performance here is quite good. What is disappointing is that this release is fullscreen, with no substantial extras besides a trailer. Hopefully a proper widescreen release will come soon.

2 out of 5 starsWhy No Widescreen DVD? ^
I own a Video Casette Timecop and ordered a DVD thinking it would be in the same widescreen format as the original video casette--what a disappointment. There are a number of scenes in the original widescreen format that cannot be duplicated in the full screen format which, as I found out, is the ONLY format offered on DVD. This Video company blew it!

5 out of 5 starsOne of his better flims ^
VAN DAMME all the way, good fight scene's with good acting...you can watch this over and over it never gets boring..Ron Silver plays his part well..
