Editorial Comments

Description:
" The legend spawned by the Vlad the Impaler and made famous by Bram Stoker's Dracula has taken on a life of its own. While most people believe that vampires are the stuff of horror movies, there are people who call themselves vampires and live their lives accordingly. THE VAMPIRE MYTH introduces two such people, Nicholas Strathloch and Catrina Coffin. Nicholas says he comes from a long line of vampires and that vampirism is his religion. Catrina simply enjoys the lifestyle, including sleeping in a coffin, only going out at night, and drinking donors' blood. Strathloch solves the problem of blood with a live-in donor, who shares his feelings in this program. While Nicholas and Catrina offer an intimate portrait of life as 20th century vampires, skeptics claim that their practices are examples of a sex fetish or a psychological response to abuse. Yet others believe. THE VAMPIRE MYTH investigates both sides and traces the history of this bizarre phenomenon with open eyes. "

Amazon.com:
Like other programs in A&E's The Unexplained series, Vampire Myth doesn't provide any final answer to the question, "Are these creatures for real?" It does, however, introduce viewers to a woman who sleeps in a coffin and a man who lives with his "blood donor" and frequents a vampire fetish club in, of all places, Beverly Hills. The hour-long video also offers literary and historical perspectives for our fascination with these denizens of the dark, examining Bram Stoker's Dracula and revealing the grisly details of the 15th-century reign of Vlad the Impaler, who liked to dine among his screaming victims. Although the narration warns of disturbing imagery, the clips of modern-day vampires sucking blood from the shoulders or arms of their donors (necks, apparently, are now passé) are actually fairly tame. For all of its fangs and fanfare, ultimately Vampire Myth lacks bite. --Larisa Lomacky Moore
