nice warm-up A nice book to learn about the state tests. It gives concise reviews of what kids needs to know, so you can check their readiness. The test taking tips are very useful for first-timers to raise scores. A very helpful warm-up for both parents and kids. Note that such a thin book doesn't do much to improve math or reading. That requires daily learning in school and study in home. There is a nice web site http://www.beestar.org you can use weekly to assess your child's skills step by step. With the fundamentals in place, this book is a nice warm-up.
Buy This Book Now!!!!!!!!!! Sometimes I tutor my nine year old nephew, so I purchased this book to help him pass the NY State 4th Grade English Language Arts and Math tests. He has a regular tutor, but I fill in when the tutor cancels or my nephew needs additional help. My nephew was not doing well in school. the marks on his last report card were all below grade level (I am beginning to think his tutor is not explaining concepts well or does not spend enough time with him). The school and his parents had a meeting about his lack of progress because they were concerned about his poor grades, and comments were made that he would never pass the ELA. Well, it turns out they were wrong. Thanks to the guidance from this book, he not only passed the ELA, he received the highest score on Session 1 in the entire fourth grade! All his classmates cheered when his grades were announced in class. (Session 2 and 3 haven't been graded yet, but his teacher told my nephew that he did very well on those also). The book is only 54 pages, so there aren't that many sample stories that might be similar to those on the test, but I looked up similar stories on-line and made up my own questions for him to answer, according to the guidance in this book. It is not too late to purchase this book for the Math portion of the ELA which is given this coming May. Buying this book is the best investment I could have made to help my nephew pass the test. He is so proud and has much more confidence in his school work now, I am hoping he will completely turn the corner and continue to do well in the future! A heartfelt thank you to authors Cynthia and Drew Johnson and Kaplan/Simon and Schuster publishing.
