Product Description: In this enthralling new tale from bestselling author Christopher Golden, one man is drawn into a realm just across the veil from our own, where every captivating myth and fairy tale is true, the vanished exist–and every fear is founded….
Yielding to his father's wishes, Oliver Bascombe abandoned his dream of being an actor and joined the family law firm. Now he will marry a lovely young woman bearing the Bascombe stamp of approval. But on the eve of his wedding, a blizzard sweeps in–bringing with it an icy legend who calls into question everything Oliver believes about the world and his place in it….
Pursued by a murderous creature who heeds no boundaries, Jack Frost needs Oliver's help to save both himself and his world–an alternate reality slowly being displaced by our own. To help him, Oliver Bascombe, attorney-at-law, will have to become Oliver Bascombe, adventurer, hero–and hunted. So begins a magnificent journey where he straddles two realities…and where, even amid danger, Oliver finds freedom for the very first time.
Stretch & Bore I'm going to be the odd man out. This was a chore to read and almost impossible to finish.
1. Dumb (unbelievably so) protagonist - should have been killed early. 2. Golden seemingly wanted to see how many pages he could stretch each segment so he could make the story last for several volumes (read $$$).
In a word: BORED. In three words: Bored to Death.
Mythtastic! This tale draws you in from the beginning. There are no dull moments as Oliver and Frost travail the worlds on each side of the veil. Old myths live on through these writings. Excellent story, I can't wait to read the next book.
The best series Christopher Golden has undertaken thus far I have been a fan of Christopher Golden for years, since he started his Shadow Saga about 10 years ago. I read all of the books in that series and didn't really give much thought to trying his other series for some reason... A couple of years ago, I started reading his Menagerie series and fell in love with that. In between the last two books, I decided to pick up the first book in the Veil series, the Myth Hunters, after reading a little about it. This, by far, is the best series of contemporary / urban / dark fantasy (or whatever you'd like to call it) I have read, hands down. I wasn't even finished with 1/3 of book one and I was already chomping at the bit for book 2 and bummed to find out book 3 would not be out until 2008. Golden takes the modern world and integrates many cultures worth of mythology in a way you have to read to believe. I bet there were a ton of authors out there who said "Why didn't I think of that?!?!?!?!" after reading his books. Please do yourself a favor and read these books!!!
Super Reader Not too bad. A wealthy lawyer is a somewhat unwitting participant in a wedding to be held tomorrow, when Jack Frost crashes through his window.
He gets drawn into their Border world, and a conflict between those beings able to cross between too worlds and the Hunters that are out to destroy them. The lawyer's sister also seems to have a role to play.
Tense and interesting enough to want to read the next one.
Fast moving entertainment OK... my brother hates time travel stories, but I have this thing where I really dislike stories about charactors from the "real world" falling into another hidden world somehow magically connected to our world. Zelanzy did it up fine in the Amber books and that's just enough for me. It's basically an authors strategy for introducting a fantasy world. Generally I prefer the novelist to plunge full into the world building and have the whole fantasy tale take place in the imagined world. None of the cross over business. I picked this book up on the nice review from the SciFi web site, and I'm glad I did. It's a fun and fast moving entertainment and I am greatly looking forward to reading the rest of the series. I still have my bias about crossover books, but I found this book so engaging that my bias has been suspended this time. Recommended.
