Amazon.com Review:
If you don't know the difference between a lob wedge and a lemon wedge, check out Golf for Dummies, by CBS commentator Gary McCord, one of the game's most colorful--and knowledgeable--characters. It's a wonderful, often hilarious, never boring introduction to the game. Don't let the foreword by Kevin Costner or the afterword by Hootie and the Blowfish confuse the issue; this is a terrifically sound, easy-to-follow primer. McCord's potato-chip drill--yes, potato-chip drill--will revolutionize your swing, and your thinking, with overtones that could spill directly into off-the-course existence, as well.

3 out of 5 starsGolf for Gary McCord and his Editors

"Golf for Dummies" 3rd Edition is a weak attempt by a Professional (Gary McCord) to help beginners find their way around playing golf. For the most part, I found this book traveling the ranges of advanced play to intermediate play, to history of golf, to various professional courses and to techniques in how Gary made it into professional golf world. That seems good for those who do not want to play golf. But for me, I found the reading quite challenging. Gary missed making a smooth transition between a starting player with just a few used golf clubs to practice and moving onto the first purchage of golf clubs and there forward.

The lack of transition seemed to be the main weakness in the book. His editors are to blame for that. As for the content, Gary McCord has lots of good content and substance about golf. I enjoyed a few of the tips he gave about measuring the game. How many shots hit the fairway. How many were safe shots. How many were risky shots. What percentage of the game is the short play and putting. These were very good.

Golf is both an intelectual/physical and visual game. So much of what happens at the golf course requires visual clues. Gary's book could also have more visual clues as to the game. More of a hands on approach.

5 out of 5 starsGreat book for explaining the fundamentals
This is a great book that explains the fundamentals. It has been my experience that most golf problems are due to lack of understanding the fundamentals.
I have been golfing for years and found it to be a great review.

1 out of 5 starsGolf for dummies (Miniature edition
Was surprised to see a miniature edition book arrive.Stick with Golf for Dummies video..Book was disappointing.Donna

4 out of 5 starsUseful Info for beginner and intermediate golfer alike
From a novice golfer: This book was well-written and covers many of the technical fundamentals of the game. I found that the descriptions of the techniques, as well as the exercises to improve your stance or physical ability, was just as helpful as the explanation of the finer points of playing the game. I was going to read it cover-to-cover, but ended up skipping the majority of "The Part of Tens" which covers such things as the author's ten favorite private and public golf courses, and the ten favorite male and female players. I may refer back to this info in the future if I become more interested in the history of the game and descriptions of the greatest players. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the book and plan to review sections of the book repeatedly in order to strengthen my playing skills.

4 out of 5 starsWorth it
Read this book in conjunction with the golf book for dummies on etiquette. Both worth the read, though you cannot learn to play golf with either book. It will however, get you into the culture, become aware of how to approach the game and avoid many pitfalls.
