Keeps you reading This is an enjoyable book. This is hardly a ground breaking read...yet it keeps you engaged. You feel a connection to the main character Jack and empathize with his scituation. Only to imagine what you would want to do with the same injustices. Macklin is a loveable character that you relate to immediately. As the story unfolds it is taken to the extremes almost unbelievable. Yet the reader is still pulling for Jack & Macklin, the average American vs. the extremely wealthy. Hoping for justice. All in all Patterson gives us a satisfying story, not much different from his other easy, short chaptered reads.
Good revenge story I finished The Beach House in 3 days, which is fast for me. I found it engrossing and entertaining. The cruelty of the rich and powerful family in the Hamptons section of Long Island begs for retribution, and by the end of the story it happens in full measure. The method by which justice is served may be a little far-fetched, but it certainly is fun. I don't understand all of the negative reviews. Obviously, the readers went in with false expectations and failed to enjoy watching the story unfold.
Good Read! Wow! I've read most of Patterson's books and this one somehow slipped through the cracks, until now. This book's ending is so completely unexpected, I almost emailed him to see how he came up with it. Wow!!!! S.L. Chessor, author of Poodlums, Boogeymen and Booglers and My Tongue Fell Out. Poodlums, Boogeymen and Booglers: A Poetry Collection
Good start BUT......... Patterson can write, meaning he can create interesting characters you care about and books that read fast, however I find most of his books lack reality/common sense. This book reads well and is enjoyable until you hit the last 80 pages then it becomes almost silly!! To get revenge the main character kidnaps eight people and holds a mock trial on live TV??? Sounds like a bad Saturday Night Live skit then a novel by a popular author. It's just one of those books that you enjoy/love and then hate after you finish it!!!
Fast-paced Fun As I scanned the opinions of other readers, I found that in general, people either loved or hated this book. Those who didn't like it seemed to complain at the implausibility of the story. I enjoyed the book because of it's implausibility, which contributed to the overall sense of fun and adventure that is paramount to a good work of fiction. I read fiction to be entertained, not enlightened, and Beach House certainly delivers.
A good looking, charismatic young man is murdered, on the beach, while he is supposed to be waiting the arrival of an anonymous lover. Instead, he is brutally beaten to death. Something takes place in the last few seconds of his life that tips him off as to who is responsible for his murder. It is up to the dead man's brother, a promising law student, to find the clues needed to bring those responsible to justice.
While not a lot of what happens during the 356 pages is likely, it makes for a fast, fun, suspenseful read. Patterson, along with Peter DeJonge, weave a story of powerful people manipulating those lesser than they, blackmail, sex, and the limitless extremes that a person will go through for someone they truly love.
I thoroughly enjoyed Beach House and can't wait to tear into the sequel; Beach Road. If you are able to forgive a little far-fetched story telling, you too will enjoy this tale.
