Product Description: From one of the funniest minds--and pens--of our time, at last, the definitive collection of the very best of Opus, everyones favorite maladjusted penguin.
One of Americas most beloved comic geniuses is back, with this collectible 25th anniversary compendium of the best of Opus, joined by his hilarious supporting cast, including Binkley, Milo, Bill the Cat, Steve Dallas, Ronald Ann, and the rest of the residents of Bloom County and Outland.
From Antarctica to Omaha, Opus has cavorted with space creatures, impersonated rock stars, fended off accusations of penguin lust, and even campaigned for office. Now, in addition to the classic strips, Berkeley Breathed also brings us never-before-collected Bloom County cartoons and original all-new material from his Opus comics.
Brace yourself for the sidesplitting, table-pounding, milk-through-the-nose-spewing laughter that only Opus and his outlandish friends can generate. The perfect collection for both die-hard fans and those discovering the matchless humor of Berkeley Breathed for the first time.
Classic This is a classic. Everyone should have Berleley Breathed books as coffee table items.
Humor and commentary that holds up well over time... Bloom County is in my top five favorite comic strip list (keeping Calvin & Hobbes company). And when you talk about Bloom County, you're talking about the lovable penguin, Opus. Berkeley Breathed has compiled all the full color Sunday strips in the book OPUS: 25 Years of His Sunday Best. Everything from 1980 through 2005, from Bloom County through Outland and finally to just plain Opus. Great walk down memory lane, and it's amazing how well those strips hold up over time.
Breathed goes into some of his rationale behind his break between Bloom County and Outland, how Outland was started as a Sunday-only strip, and how he came back from retirement once again to do the Opus strip. He confesses that trying to stay creative and motivated is hard over time, and it's why he chose to walk away instead of letting the strip deteriorate. I have to respect that, as I've seen more than a few strips that have overstayed their welcome and are merely rehashes of the same old thing.
The only thing I wish Breathed would have done here is have a small date reference on each strip. Some of the humor is topical, and it would have been nice to have a date to remember what else was going on. Still, it's a tribute to Opus that even without dates, the humor and commentary loses none of its power. This was an hour of time well (and enjoyably) spent.
Opus, 25 Years of his Sunday Best As one who cried when Opus was put to rest, I had to have this book and I have not been disappointed.
The Penguin of Our Times If you're a last-shift baby boomer like me, Opus showed up in time to see us through college, and our early adult years. We watched him learning words from Mr. Rogers, we watched him being harried by a Kirshna...we saw in him ourselves. He kept coming back in various strips, like one's...inner penguin. After we had started raising the next generation, he joined us through their picture books. Now he's gone to sleep in Goodnight, Moon while a premature invitation to join AARP lands in my mailbox. Perhaps we are the Opus generation?
Watching this parade of Opus's adventures brings back memories of the times as well as renewed appreciation for the clever wit and art of Bloom County and Outland. His creator has chosen to retire Opus after several "careers" in different comics. With that, this book becomes something of a keepsake for it's era.
Not a good choice on the Kindle First, my issue with this book is not with the content but with the way it was published for the Kindle.
The images of the actual comics do not support the Kindle zoom function and are too small to read. This is a critical oversight on the part of the publisher.
Until this issue is corrected by the publisher, buy this book in print, but do not purchase the Kindle version.
