The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird's world, vampyres have always existed. In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire--that is, if she makes it through the Change. Not all of those who are chosen do. It’s tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx. But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers. When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends.
Expect to be offended! ^ Just because the main character is a teenage girl does not mean the author's have to write like one. I was disappointed with the story line, the writing and the main character. I had to force myself to read this book and if it were not for the supporting character's and the small attempt at a plot, I would have never finished. The ending of the book was pathetic but it left some hope for more interesting twists in the future books. Also, expect to be offended countless times while in Zoey Redbird's thoughts. The author's did a great job of taking low blows at most of their readers.
Yet another disappointing vampire book.. ^ I have three words for this book: Elementary, Predictable, Boring. May I also add that I read this book because someone told me that it was a combination of Harry Potter and Twilight. I have read the complete series of both and was incredibly disappointed in Twilight but fell in love with Harry Potter. Either way, it, in no way, resembled Twilight. I think people said that because it had to do with vampires. Yet there were zero similarities to Twilight, aside from vampires, which can be linked to thousands of other books. There were some links here and there to Harry Potter. It took place at a school and had a bully (Aphrodite)...that's about the only link to Harry Potter. However, I think this book should be in children's fiction and not young adult based on the writing. There was more witchcraft than vampire activity. Really there wasn't any vampire activity except for the blood lust. Overall, very poor quality book and tons of spelling errors (always a turn-off). I'm going to move on to a real vampire books now (Anne Rice).
Marked. ^ My mom's boyfriend's daughter, who is 13, and happens to like some of the same books as me let me borrow her House of Night Series. I think I saw these on amazon before, but thought nothing about them. But since she thought I would enjoy it I decided to read them.
Right away when I started reading it, I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to get into the book. It seemed like it was going to be too young adult for me with no substance and a lot of teenager slang that I wasn't going to be able to take. But once it started to get more in depth into the House of Night with Zoey going to school there it started to get better. And now, I must admit that I am ready to read the next one.
The book just goes into alter reality where vampyres are known about. Heck, some of them are celebrities. I would like to know more about the history of this alter reality, how the vamp became how they are. I was confused at first because it felt like I should have known more before I actually started to read the book. Hopefully in some of the other books that follow it will give more information.
The book is about zoey redbird who gets marked to become a vampyre and she must move to the school House of Night in order to live. Because, if you get marked as a vampyre and don't go to the House of Night you die. The house of night is a place to go while you are living through the changing process to become a vampyre. You stay there for four years just like a high school and at the end if you can take the change you become a vampyre.
Zoey finds out she is not like all the other fledglings, she has extra powers and her mark is different than everyone elses.
After getting past the beginning it is a really good book, and now I am off to read Betrayed, the second book of the series.
Great series! ^ After finishing the Sookie Stackhouse series and the Twilight Saga, I was looking for another good read. A friend suggested the House of Night series. I was not dissapointed! I read Marked in one night. I just could not put it down! Great book! Looking forward to continuing the series.
LOVED IT!!! ^ woah! this book was incredibly awesome!i can evens ay it was much better than the twilight saga! and trust me, i am a huge twilight fan. but somehow i felt more conncted to this one. prob becuz in twilight there were like a hundred secrets and cuz it was only about vamps nad wolves. in houseof nightg novels, u kindof find urself in the same place as zoey at times (boy troubles, best friend drama, etc) but overall... grea book! amazing!
