Amazon.com: Relying on the tried-but-true odd-couple set up, Perfect Strangers focuses on the comical lives of Larry Appleton (Mark Linn-Baker) and Balki Bartokomous (Bronson Pinchot). Larry is an uptight American who has moved away from his family's Wisconsin home for his own apartment in Chicago. His life is changed forever when his childlike cousin Balki--a sheepherder from the fictional island of Mypos--shows up on his doorstep with the goal of becoming a U.S. citizen. A hit sitcom for ABC that ran from 1986 to 1993, Perfect Strangers offers some heartwarming storylines, a few laughs, and some genuine chemistry between the two leads. The first few years of the comedy are among the show's best, as Larry and Balki get accustomed to each other's ways. Linn-Baker plays the straight man who sets Pinchot up to deliver the best lines. While Pinchot definitely has the showier "fish out of water" part--and "Don't be ridiculous!" tag line that became a catchphrase for a year or two--Linn-Baker creates the more relatable character. He's working in a small shop, but his dream is to become a photojournalist. The show actually does a nice job of making sure Larry never loses sight of his goals, even as Balki is dragging him from one adventure to another. The four-disc DVD set includes all six episodes from the first mini season, as well as 22 episodes from the show's second full season. Other than a "Dance of Joy" extra--which includes a montage of dance clips from the first two seasons--there are no special featurettes. Fans of high definition may be disappointed by the video transfer, which clearly dates the series. At its worst, Perfect Strangers is an outdated show that isn't as funny as it thinks it is. But at its best, it projects giddy innocence and is easy viewing. Flash-forward to 2005 when Pinchot is throwing himself at Janice Dickinson on the reality series The Surreal Life: Now that's not easy to watch. --Jae-Ha Kim
Perfect Strangers on DVD...finally! I waited for this DVD for so long! I'm so happy Perfect Strangers finally came out on DVD! I have thoroughly enjoyed watching it! It's like going back in time to my childhood.
give us more Why wont WB release the other seasons of Perfect Strangers when season one and two was "perfect". I have seen all the classic comedy teams and none of them could match these two for physical and verbal comedy.
They don't make 'em like that anymore! I was thirteen years old when Perfect Strangers first aired on television. Watching the episodes now brings back a lot of fond memories for me. I remember watching this show with my family every week. It was such a sweet show, full of heart and of course it was hilarious! The so called "comedies" of today can't compare to shows like this and the many other gems of the 80's (and other decades as well, of course!) Shows like Perfect Strangers proved you didn't have to have sex or foul language to be funny. It was a show the whole family could watch together and everyone could enjoy. I'm glad I'm not a kid now because save for a few shows, I don't know what I would watch with my family! As I said my my title of this review: "They don't make 'em like that anymore!"
Bring on the rest of the series! It's very seldom that I can watch a sitcom that my wife and I, together with our 8 year old daughter, can enjoy. This classic series from the 80s had all of us in stitches. Good, clean, wholesome laughs is what this series can offer you. Surprisingly, most of the jokes have aged well.
Bronson Pinchot is a genius as Balki and the rest of the cast was also great. We finished all 4 discs in 2 days. Let's hope that the rest of the series is released soon.
Great memories from the 1980s I remember sitting and watching this show with my room mate at the time and laughing until we were in tears. This is a forgotten and very under rated sitcom !!
