The uncut version of the movie gets about 3.5 stars. The 2 star rating is for this DVD. My biggest gripe with this DVD is that it is not truly widescreen. It looks "widescreen" but signal output is in 4:3 ratio, meaning the black bars are part of the image and you can never get rid of it, even on a 16x9 TV. This is a great version of a well-known childrens story. I saw it as a child and the film is so unique that it made it very memorable. This is a Japanese cartoon (not spoken in Japanese) so the animation is a little different but again, it adds to the experience. This is a must see as a break from the norm. ... more

Oh so slowly did this film coax a tear from each my eyes. Don't believe twits who either couldn't finish it or (gasp) see it as a christian fable, they're obviously impatient christians! (as far as i know, the author was a confirmed buddhist...)
