|
By: Julie Des Jardins Publisher: The Feminist Press at CUNY March 01, 2010
Every day at the bookstore where I work I have to stare at the cover with a photograph of Francis Crick. I do not enjoy it. If you do not know who Francis Crick is then you should read The Madame Curie Complex. Francis Crick is only a small part (ultimately in the history of science a big part) of one of the many stories of men getting credit for women's work and great women scientists who were undermined... more

| 4. Baghdad Burning: Girl Blog from Iraq |
|
By: Riverbend Publisher: The Feminist Press at CUNY April 01, 2005
I came across this wonderful book by accident. I forgot that in this day and age, we could still glimpse into a world other than the one media feeds to the public. This book is a collection of blogs from a young woman living with her family in Baghdad. It's an eyewitness account of how it is to be living in the center of bombing when the American forces (along with other unfortunate nations) begin... more

By: Barbara Ehrenreich, Deirdre English Publisher: The Feminist Press at CUNY January 01, 1993
this is the book that clarified my thoughts around gender and medical professions in the United States. I'm now in school for midwifery, in no small part due to Ehrenreich's analysis in this book. totally inspiring and gives you the pieces to understand why our "healthcare system" is so sexist, among other problems... more

| 7. Still Alive: A Holocaust Girlhood Remembered |
|
By: Ruth Kluger Publisher: The Feminist Press at CUNY November 01, 2001
Reading *Still Alive* was like having a conversation with someone I like and admire. A one-sided conversation, one might say, since Kluger was doing all the talking, and I was contributing nothing but my interpretation of her words. But Kluger answered many of the questions I would have asked, had she been sitting across from me. "What was it like after you escaped, when you were thrown in with Germans... more

Dear fellow readers,
I have become a personal friend of the author, Shahrnush Parsipur recently as fortunately we both reside in Northern California now. I have some understanding of the complexity of Iranian society. There have been a... more

| 10. Not So Quiet...: Stepdaughters of War (Women & Peace) |
|
By: Helen Zenna Smith Publisher: The Feminist Press at CUNY January 01, 1993
I found this book to be absolutely riveting. I have always been interested in female involvement in World War I, and this book tells in a very accessible way what it was like to be in the "Forbidden Zone" during this truly horrific war. It reminds me of Trumbo's Johnny Got His Gun in that we see the VAD's struggling to keep their sanity in terrible circumstances. Well worth reading... more
