| 1. The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress |
|
By: Robert A. Heinlein Publisher: Orb Books June 15, 1997
As usual Heinlien covered issues and concepts that have become part not just of Scfi but of our mainstream consciousness decades before they were fashionable. Anyone wanting to understand modern science fiction would do well to study the ways of this master. ... more

| 2. I Am Legend |
|
By: Richard Matheson Publisher: Orb Books September 15, 1997
First and foremost, anyone considering buying this book -- I speak specifically of the trade paperback edition with Will Smith on the cover -- should be advised: the first half of the book is the short novel "I AM LEGEND" and the second half is a collection of unrelated short stories by Richard Matheson. Nothing on the cover, title page, preface, etc. clues you in to that fact. In the front matter... more

| 4. Inferno |
|
By: Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle Publisher: Orb Books September 02, 2008
When I was a kid, I read this book along with all of Niven's other work. I worshiped the guy as a writer. Now, decades later, I have re-read a few of those works and for the most part, they just dont stand up. Inferno however manages to still have a little wallop as a work of fiction and I found that I was enjoying this short take on Dante's epic poem.
The main Character... more

| 5. Glory Road |
|
By: Robert A. Heinlein Publisher: Orb Books March 21, 2006
I enjoyed this book, especially the last 1/3, even if disparaged by some reviewers, as it strayed from your typical "they lived happily ever after" Hollywood ending. I almost lost interest in the middle as it bogged down a bit when they visited what's-his-face (Star's friend) and got kicked out because he didn't screw their 11 year-old virgin. I disliked the subtle but frequent references to sex with... more

| 6. The Vampire Tapestry |
|
By: Suzy McKee Charnas Publisher: Orb Books August 19, 2008
I won't give you a summary of the book because plenty of other reviews here have done that. What I will say about it, though, is that it's a forgettable read and a mediocre book -it's like forgetting what you had for lunch yesterday. It's neither good, nor bad. Scary, no, not at all. That's not a criticism of the book because I don't think the author ever meant it to be scary. The publishers apparently... more

| 7. Sword & Citadel: The Second Half of 'The Book of the New Sun' |
|
By: Gene Wolfe Publisher: Orb Books October 15, 1994
I have just finished reading the third and fourth novels in Gene Wolfe's THE BOOK OF THE NEW SUN and my immediate opinion is that I need to reread all four novels again. This is a challenging, dense, and fascinating work. I must be honest and confess that I did not see the genius in the work that many other highly intelligent readers have seen, but that could say more about me than about the work... more
