By: Lois McMaster Bujold Publisher: The NESFA Press July 01, 2000
I really do not understand all the rave reviews. I'm a sci-fi fan, and an avid reader. I am continually frustrated by seeing good reviews on sci-fi books that don't hold water. And this is a typical example. Maybe if sci-fi is all you read, then you seen things through a different lens than I do. I really tried to give this book a chance, but about half way through I kept thinking of a word---booooooring... more

| 2. The Warrior's Apprentice |
|
By: Lois McMaster Bujold Publisher: NESFA Press February 15, 2002
This book might be a good for a young adult or a child.
I just do not understand why people praise this series so much. First, the story is not very exciting. It does not help that all along you have a feeling that the hero cannot fail. Likely this is because apart from Miles everyone in the book is pretty dumb. The whole thing is just a dull fairy tale that is totally unbelievable. In... more

| 5. Ingathering: The Complete People Stories of Zenna Henderson |
|
By: Zenna Henderson, Mark Olson, Priscilla Olson Publisher: NESFA Press May 01, 1995
Every time I read Ms Henderson's People series (And there have been MANY times) I find myself as I was, the first time I read one of her people books as a young teen; enthralled, amazed, envious, and a little homesick!
Well, I have long been an adult, and I still feel that magic, that longing and wanting, and the need for more (though sadly that desire will never be met) and I reread... more

| 6. Last Exit to Babylon - Volume 4: The Collected Stories of Roger Zelazny |
|
By: Roger Zelazny Publisher: NESFA Press July 01, 2009
An excellent read. If you love Zelazny's writing, this is a must-have. While much of the book is stuff I've read before, the explanations of how the stories came to be written, what Zelazny was thinking & all were just fantastic. At the end, there is a section that gave me surprise as it went through book after book with a lot of background I'd never read anywhere before about some favorite books... more

| 7. Threshold - Volume 1: The Collected Stories of Roger Zelazny |
|
By: Roger Zelazny Publisher: NESFA Press February 14, 2009
This review applies to the first 3 volumes of the set (haven't read the others yet)
Roger Zelazny deserves every bit of his status as a legendary SF&F author. At his best (which he often was - see Lord of Light), his prose verged on poetry without ever losing its readability. His short fiction (gathered in several partial collections over the years) was as good, if not better. So, running... more

| 8. The Rediscovery of Man: The Complete Short Science Fiction of Cordwainer Smith |
|
By: Cordwainer Smith Publisher: NESFA Press June 01, 1993
Wow, what a mind. Kind of like the literary verson of Salvador Dali. Get past the first few stories and you're on a wild fantasy ride for 600+ pages. Some people will find his writing too weird but I loved it. Original, creative and like nothing else. I was totally drawn in. I love that kind of escape where you leave earth completely because anything remotely tying you to the world you know is completely... more

| 9. This Mortal Mountain - Volume 3: The Collected Stories of Roger Zelazny |
|
By: Roger Zelazny Publisher: NESFA Press July 01, 2009
Another fantastic, well done continuation of the collected works & the life of Roger Zelazny. NESFA really did a fantastic job with this as they have with the others in the collection. The amount of research & documentation they did is staggering. They collected comments & old correspondence from Zelazny's friends & peers. The sheer number of authors that he interacted with is amazing... more

|
By: Roger Zelazny Publisher: NESFA Press February 14, 2009
Volume 2 of a planned 6-volume set and Zelazny is getting into his stride. This volume contains a feast of brilliant Zelazny fiction. Of particular note is the shorter magazine version of This Immortal as And Call Me Conrad, a self-contained extract from his masterpiece Lord Of Light, and other wonderful stories like The Furies, For A Breath I Tarry, the first four Dilvish stories and many more, all... more
