| 1. Treasure Island (Kingfisher Classics) |
|
By: Robert Louis Stevenson Publisher: Kingfisher Books Ltd October 22, 2001
There are few novels that have had as much influence in popular culture as "Treasure Island." Pirates with talking parrots, treasure maps, mutiny, deceit, this novel has it all. In spite of this, a great many individuals pass on reading the book because they think it is simply a childrens story. If you are leaning toward this bias, you should know that this claim is not true; the novel is filled with... more

By: Anna Sewell Publisher: Kingfisher Books Ltd October 22, 2001
Animal books that are told from the creature's point of view (whether cat, dog, horse, or some other species entirely) are a dime a dozen these days, but "Black Beauty," was the first book of its kind to use this technique and is thus the forerunner to all animal stories that came after it. Most people are unaware that Anna Sewell broke new literary ground when she wrote "Black Beauty" in the style... more

| 6. At the Waterworks (Magic Bus) |
|
By: Joanna Cole Publisher: Kingfisher Books Ltd 1990-07
This is a great, almost un American book in that kids are told that it's OK, even wonderful and wondrous to be science geeks, be curious. Love the Frizz when she says "take chances, get messy, make mistakes," and encourages her students to explore. In a society that elevates sports and violence for boys, and beauty and cattiness for girls, this series stands out for encouraging gender neutral intellectualism... more
