| 1. Sophocles : Antigone (Focus Classical Library) |
|
By: Sophocles Publisher: Focus Publishing/R. Pullins Company September 01, 1998
I read Sophocles Antigone for graduate Humanities class. It is an essential reading to understand Greek Tragedy. It is also a foundation stone of literature in studying Western Civilization.
Antigone, daughter of Oedipus in 3-cycle play, faces capital punishment for burying her brother who rebelled against Thebes. Obeying instincts of loyalty of love and the divine law, she defies Creon... more

| 3. The English Language: A User's Guide |
|
By: Jack Lynch Publisher: Focus Publishing/R. Pullins Company January 05, 2008
I think this is the best reference-type grammar book that I have seen. Instead of just being filled with a bunch of rules-of thumb, it provides explanation of why to use a particular rule. The best part: For lack of a better way of putting it, the book does not subscribe to moral relativism in grammar. The author does recognize that rules of grammar or not defined by law, but he emphasizes the importance... more

| 4. Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics (Philosophical Library Series) |
|
By: Aristotle Publisher: Focus Publishing/R. Pullins Company May 01, 2002
Logical Summary of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics books 1-4
As a title the Nicomachean Ethics works at two levels. 1) Nicomachean tells us that this work is not Aristotles but lecture notes compiled by Nicomachus. The work is pedagogical. It shows us what Aristotle thought philosophic education should be, and is Aristotles training regimen for the virtuous soul. Aristotle states... more

| 6. Hesiod's Theogony (Focus Classical Library) |
|
By: Hesiod, Richard S. Caldwell Publisher: Focus Publishing/R. Pullins Company June 01, 1987
I purchased this book for a mythology class I am taking. It really worth every penny. Notes are recorded throughout the poem, so if you aren't 100% clear about what a line means or what it is referencing to - you can easily find out. This book is full of great information if you are interested in greek gods and how the world came to be (in the eyes of greeks in the archaic age)... more

| 7. Plato : Phaedo (Focus Philosophical Library) |
|
By: Plato Publisher: Focus Publishing/R. Pullins Company July 01, 1998
I have no desire to critique Plato or to give a synopsis of his Phaedo. What drew me to this review is actually the translators' introduction. Brann, Kalkavage and Salem do, what I think, is an excellent job at breaking down the imagery and themes of the piece while adding a tremendous amount of background. If this were my first encounter with Plato or Greek thought in general, I would find the... more

| 8. Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata: Teachers' Materials & Answer Keys for Pars I & II (Latin Edition) |
|
By: Hans H. Orberg Publisher: Focus Publishing/R. Pullins Company January 01, 2003
Do not confuse Teachers' Materials with teachers guide. There is nothing written in English in this book to help the teachers. It consists of answers for the Lingua Latina-Pars I Exercitia Latina I book, as well as unit tests, and answers. If you are going to study Latin, I highly recommend this method. My son has had 2 years of a Latin Primer, he's in 6th grade, and doing well with this course. If... more

| 9. Lingua Latina: Part I: Latin-Spanish Vocabulary (Latin Edition) |
|
By: Hans H. Orberg Publisher: Focus Publishing/R. Pullins Company 2000-12
My mother gave me this book when I expressed interest in learning Latin. She also gave me a Latin-English dictionary and a copy of Wheelocks. She found this book did not stand alone to learn Latin, although the author claims it should. I thought I was getting some type of grasp when another package arrived, including the Student Manual and the Vocabulary list. Now I am getting somewhere. ... more
