| 1. Little Women (Puffin Classics) |
|
By: Louisa May Alcott Publisher: Puffin April 01, 1995
Despite the Jessie Wilcox Smith illustrations on the front and back covers, I was very disappointed to discover that the artist's color plates that so perfectly capture the characters and events in this American literary classic, were omitted from this edition. Intending to give it as a gift, I ordered this book because I was under the impression that it had the famous Jessie Wilcox Smith pictures... more

|
By: Edith Nesbit, Shirley Hughes Publisher: Henry Holth & Co (J) 1994-04
I'm just finished reading the Railway Children to my 10-year-old, and it is such a great read!
I loved it as a child, and this is my second time reading it aloud. I can't recommend it enough.
It's just a nice story. Set at the turn of the century, three children are forced to leave their comfortable life in London and go live in a smaller house near a railway when their... more

| 5. Alfie Gets in First |
|
By: Shirley Hughes Publisher: Red Fox June 16, 2009
An entertaining story about a little boy who, racing his mother and baby sister into the house, accidentally locks them outside. A page-turner for kids and moms. One very nice aspect of the story is the sense of community that Alfie's mother has with her neighbors: a crowd gathers in concern about helping her solve the problem, and when the door is open she invites everyone in for tea. This is... more

Anything Shirley Hughes writes is worth reading! She writes about everyday situations with which my 3 year old and I can relate (and we laugh, cry or feel whatever other emotion she provokes) and always enjoy!. She both writes and illustrates her books - and do so beautifully!... more

| 7. An Evening at Alfie's |
|
By: Shirley Hughes Publisher: Red Fox August 11, 2009
Absolutely delightful, my 3 year old kids love all the drama in the book. After reading the book, they are open to spending some time with a baby sitter (we have never left them with a baby sitter yet) at home. However, I personally don't agree with one sentence in the book where it says the baby sitter was doing homework in front of the television. I would not let my kids do their homework in front... more

| 10. Alfie's Feet |
|
By: Shirley Hughes Publisher: Red Fox July 14, 2009
This story is about young Alfie's experience of getting new boots and trying them out in the park, only to discover that he's put them on the wrong feet. Like all the Alfie books, this one is characterized by Hughes' detailed, warm renderings of a loving family. This one is particularly rich in tactile images: you can almost hear the flapping of the birds he chases as he splashes through cool puddles... more
