Inevitably every fan of Sherlock Holmes will reach the final story and sadly realize that there will be no more trips to 221B Baker Street from Arthur Conan Doyle's pen. The tantalizing hints dropped by Watson of other adventures seem to be destined to be forever untold. Happily others have taken up the task of chronicling these and other adventures of Holmes and/or Watson. Some have produced tales... more

Let me say up front that I didn't expect to like this book. BUT I love Sharyn McCrumb's Ballad novels. She hasn't released one in a few years but after interacting with Sharyn on Facebook, I decided to reread all 8 Ballad novels. If you haven't read any of those, you're in for a real treat. "Songcatcher" and "The Rosewood Casket" are my favorites.
So I finished my self-appointed... more

|
By: Sharyn McCrumb Publisher: Ballantine Books December 28, 1996
I loved this book! It's a dead-on view of science fiction conventions. The technology mentioned in the story has changed, but conventions themselves-- not so much. The academic who wrote a science fiction book (the title referenced BIMBOS OF THE DEATH SUN) who lives in fear his colleague will discover his pseudonym makes a great protagonist for this mystery set at a mythical convention. And... more

Over the years I've probably read everything Sharyn McCrumb has written, including her short story collection FOGGY MT. BREAKDOWN.
In my estimation, THE SONGCATCHER eclipses all her other work and that's saying a lot. Not only is she a master wordsmith but the more than interesting structure of her novel is admirable, to say the least.
Not too many writers can combine such... more

Too many characters and story lines makes this book hard to read. Definitely not a page turner. The author does a great job of uniting everything in the end, but it was hard to stay focused up until that point... more

REALLY LIKED THE BOOK, MOSTLY BECAUSE I LIKE THE WRITER. THOUGHT SHE CARRIED IT A LITTLE TOO FAR ABOUT HOW FANS ARE GA, GA--OVER THESE GUYS, I LIKE RACING WELL, BUT NOT TO THIS EXTENT. BUT STILL A GOOD STORY AND AS A WRITER, SHARYN CANNOT BE BEATEN. DH... more

By: Sharyn Mccrumb, Adam Edwards Publisher: Ingalls Publishing Group April 01, 2010
Read this book anticipating wonderful things since I love the author's Ballad stories, and her racing books have been good reads, too. But instead of falling short, this one kept right up with the others. There were surprises--I liked the male characters better than Pajan, the main female character. As usual, the descriptions of small town life was what carried this book all the way to the finish... more

By: Sharyn McCrumb Publisher: Signet May 04, 2004
The book itself was in excellent condition. I felt this story wasn't quite as good as the others in this series. I would re-read the others, but don't know that I would read this one again. I would have liked it better if there had been more of Spencer and Nora. Nevertheless, it's a good story... more
