By: Robert A. Heinlein Publisher: Ace Trade October 01, 1991
This bloated, boring piece of juvenilia does nothing to enhance Heinlein's rep.
Page after page of lame, flat dialogue confirms my opinion it's always a mistake to
publish 'uncut' versions, 'as the author intended.'
This is the case here. A pretty good tale is undermined by dated slang and
lifeless dialogue. As a former journalist, it pains me to... more

By: Robert A. Heinlein Publisher: Orb Books June 15, 1997
As usual Heinlien covered issues and concepts that have become part not just of Scfi but of our mainstream consciousness decades before they were fashionable. Anyone wanting to understand modern science fiction would do well to study the ways of this master. ... more

By: Robert A. Heinlein Publisher: Orb Books March 21, 2006
I enjoyed this book, especially the last 1/3, even if disparaged by some reviewers, as it strayed from your typical "they lived happily ever after" Hollywood ending. I almost lost interest in the middle as it bogged down a bit when they visited what's-his-face (Star's friend) and got kicked out because he didn't screw their 11 year-old virgin. I disliked the subtle but frequent references to sex with... more

By: Robert Heinlein Publisher: Del Rey September 26, 2006
This is vintage Heinlein: take a futuristic situation, and make it convincing: figure out in detail how it would work, and mix in scenes of daily life with the exoticism.
Temperature extremes? You solve them by migrating out of the colder hemisphere, once a year. Transportation? You invent an "iceboat" that can run on frozen canals (this was written in the 1950s). Point out that even... more

By: Robert A. Heinlein Publisher: Del Rey October 12, 1986
I like the book, I did. However, I can't see how it deserved to win the Hugo Award in 1956. I've begun to read all of the nominees and winners of the Hugo and Nebula awards since their inception. While this book is the best I have read so far, I remain continually amazed at the quality and content of the books from that era (1948-1956). It clearly was a different time and mindset. more

| 8. Citizen of the Galaxy |
|
By: Robert A. Heinlein Publisher: Pocket May 17, 2005
I was very disappointed with this novel; my first foray into Heinlein. Heinlein's prose in Citizen of the Galaxy is atrocious. Massive uses of semicolons; just like I am doing in this review. Very annoying; I had to stop on page 55; also lots and lots of cliches; and the dialogue is sophomoric and clumsy, for someone used to reading Malamud and Updike. (For comparison purposes, though:Asimov's fiction... more

By: Robert A. Heinlein Publisher: Putnam Adult June 19, 1973
I 1st read this book as a teen in a constuction camp outside Mt Isa in Queensland Australia. The year was 1974 and I was about to turn 18. I am now 53 and the book I am currently reading is one and the same. A bit dog eared but not too bad for my 3rd copy of this book. I am an unashamed Heinlein fan with a copy of every one of his books but this is by far my favourite . . . But if you buy... more

| 10. The Door into Summer |
|
By: Robert A. Heinlein Publisher: Del Rey October 12, 1986
This is the first science fiction book I ever read. It has stayed with me for literally decades. The story is gentle, thought-provoking and genuinely humorous. After reading it, science fiction became a favored genre and has remained so since. With our acreage blanketed under two feet of frozen snow, one knows the cats and the dog are longing for that door into summer... more
