By: Rachel Carson Publisher: Mariner Books October 22, 2002
I got this info from an article on some "fairness in media" website so it is not mine and I'm only drawing on the parts that express the view I wish to express. That given, I will comment upon it at its end.
""Sometimes you find mass murderers in the most unlikely places. Take Rachel Carson. She was, by all accounts, a mild-mannered writer for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service... more

Rachel Carson reveals the world through her interactions with her young nephew. Our role as educators, parents and caregivers of the young child is to give the young mind as many quality experiences where both can revisit, relive and relearn the many wonders of the world around us. The photographs in this edition are a wonderful compliment to the message of Carson's writing... more

| 3. The Edge of the Sea |
|
By: Rachel Carson Publisher: Peter Smith Pub Inc 1999-06
Carson takes a more detailed look at life on the edge of the sea. Having been near one of the areas she mentnioned helped make the subject matter more personal. However, she didn't drag me into this book like I was when I read some of her other works. I felt it to be a little dull in places, even though the the information was interesting throughout the book. Certainly worth reading if you're looking... more

| 5. Under the Sea-Wind (Penguin Classics) |
|
By: Rachel Carson Publisher: Penguin Classics April 03, 2007
This is a very unusual nature book. Most nature books are based on first-hand experience and observations (e.g. see Henry David Thoreau, Edward Abbey, Robert Finch's books). While Rachel Carson certainly studied and observed the animals she describes in this book, she did not dive under the sea, thus a lot of the narrative is based on imagination (educated imagination, no doubt). The personification... more

By: Rachel Carson Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Company 1962
Cherry-picking facts to present misleading statistical pictures outside of their context is reprehensible at best. Science is not about agendas; it's about getting after the truth. Ideas have consequences, as do dangerous, ideological movements supported by faulty and incomplete data.
Carson's argument that DDT resulted in a spike of cancer deaths among children may have caught the attention... more

Rachel Carson (1907-64) died of complications from breast cancer at the age of 56 which makes Silent Spring, published before she told anyone of her condition, a haunted book, a dead woman walking seeking justice for a crime. | 8. Lost Woods: The Discovered Writing of Rachel Carson |
|
By: Rachel Carson Publisher: Beacon Press September 15, 1999
The book is a collection of Rachel Carson's discovered writing, but it isn't a simple collection of her essays. Thanks to the excellent editor, Linda Lear, all of the 31 essays are well organized in four parts, and each one begins with an editor's preamble that explains background, Carson's motivation, and other useful information for the specific essay. With those preambles and essays, I had a... more
