Sugar Flowers Honestly, I was quite dissapointed with this book. I thought it would give me a more step by step instruction. I have found other books much more useful.
this is for advanced decorators This book is quite complete. Some of the chapters deal with fondant, gum paste [recipes included], seasonal gum paste flowers such as Alstroemeria, Anemone, Campanula,Bleeding Heart, Gardenia, Geranium, Parrot Tulip, Hibiscus, Iris, Water Lily, Bird of Paradise, Gloriosa Lily. as well as the usual roses, violets, daffodils. etc. This is not the entire bouquet! There's not just flowers in this book, There's unusual cakes as well as all the sugar art goodies to match, patterns included.
Novice Cake Decorators Can Do It Too! I like this book very much because it gives you step by step details and explanations. I have been able to practice making and using royal and fondant icing to decorate my cakes. I feel Mr. Woolley wrote this book as if he were teaching students in his studio. The pictures are excellent in their quality. This is a wonderful assest when using the book as your teacher. I look forward to taking a class with him.
Technique Oriented I ordered this book and my first impression was one of disappontment. The cakes aren't really all that stunning; however there are lots of step by step instructions on how to make flowers. So if you are looking for instructions on making flowers you might like this more than I did. If you want ideas for neat cakes, I dont think you'll be all that delighted. If I had looked at this book first in a bookstore I dont think I would have bought it.
Sugar Artistry Cakes by Design works for me at every level, beginning, intermediate, and advanced. The photographs are stunning and the illustrations helped me through each process. I refer back to the book often for inspiration. I have a collection of sugar art books and Cakes by Design is the one that sparked my passion for this art form! I also bought the DVD which is a great companion to the book! I can't wait for Scott's next creative release. I would recommend this book to sugar art students of all skill levels. This book is an absolutely beautiful guide to works that any of us are capable of.
