| 1. Bird Songs: 250 North American Birds in Song |
|
By: Les Beletsky Publisher: Chronicle Books September 21, 2006
I gave this to my mother for Christmas and she absolutely loved it. The birds are separated by region, so it's easy to find the birds in your area, by picture or even by song. The sounds were so clear, just like the sounds you've heard from your back yard. The book is super easy to use. I highly recommend it to anyone, even the novice bird lover... more

| 2. Bird Songs From Around the World: Featuring Songs of 200 Birds from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (Push and Listen) |
|
By: Les Beletsky Publisher: Chronicle Books September 20, 2007
Strong text and great illustrations. The main reason for buying this book, though, should be the excellence of the calls and songs. My complaint is that for most of the 200 species, the book provides a very short clip (about 1 second) that is played four times. You can even hear the player cutting on and off after each repetition. So you may think you're hearing a phrase as the bird would phrase... more

|
By: Les Beletsky Publisher: Interlink Pub Group October 31, 2004
I found this book only really useful for mammals. I had to supplement this book for amphibians, reptiles, and especially for birds. I found it is really only good for 'popular species' of the non-mammals. If you are a casual naturalist and only want to bring one book, it is ok, but if you trying to really id a lot of organisms and add to your life-list, this isn't a great book... more

| 5. Travellers' Wildlife Guides Peru |
|
By: David L. Pearson, Les Beletsky Publisher: Interlink Books November 30, 2004
We were going to the Amazon and Lima only, so much of this book was not pertinent to us on this trip. (We've been to the Andes/Cusco/Macchu Picchu before.) I was looking for a basic book on Amazon birds and animals, and found this to be the best compromise. I'd have preferred to buy the new Birds of Peru book instead, but the price was too high. The book is very heavy so be aware of that in your... more

| 6. Travellers' Wildlife Guides Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands |
|
By: David L. Pearson, Les Beletsky, Priscilla Barrett Publisher: Interlink Books October 30, 2004
I chose this book for my trip to Ecuador because it included non-birds, and I didn't know of a book that covered everything but birds, nor did I want to bring two separate guides. This book did include nearly all the birds, monkeys and other animals I saw in 25 days in several different ecosystems, though it could have been stronger in the area of frogs and invertebrates (spiders, ants, butterflies... more

| 7. Bird Songs 2010 Calendar |
|
By: Les Beletsky Publisher: Chronicle Books July 22, 2009
A friend had this calendar and even though it was well into the year I hunted for it, so eager to get hold of those wonderful bird songs...and so amazing, you just press this strip of paper and these marvelous birds come right into your home and sing to you! She uses the songs on her telephone answering machine--I'm going to too! Songbirds are in serious decline, but... more

By: David L. Pearson, Les Beletsky Publisher: Interlink Books July 15, 2005
Given the length of this book, it is a superb guide to the wildlife and plants that one might see in the Amazon river basin. The discussion of the natural history of the various plants and animals is fascinating and extremely well written. I read the entire book at one sitting. It would have been nice if the plates were at the same place as the description but that would have had its drawbacks as... more
