| 3. 50 Hikes in Northern Virginia: Walks, Hikes, and Backpacks from the Allegheny Mountains to Chesapeake Bay, Third Edition |
|
By: Leonard M. Adkins Publisher: Countryman May 01, 2006
I own the second edition of this book, so I don't know how it differs from the third. This is a great book, and I couldn't recommend it strongly enough. As a former DC-area resident who still returns frequently, I find this book indispensible for planning nearby hikes.
Yes, he does have a somewhat expansive view of what constitutes Northern Virginia (is Newport News considered northern... more

| 4. 50 Hikes in West Virginia: From the Allegheny Mountains to the Ohio River |
|
By: Leonard M. Adkins Publisher: Countryman Press February 28, 2005
50 hikes in West Virginia has provided me with information on places that I have been hiking for years, but never knew the background on them, such as the history of the place, why it looks like it does, what plants and animals make their homes there and what their lives are like. So many guidebooks just tell you how to get to a hike and how long it is, but 50 Hikes in West Virginia is so much more... more

|
By: Victoria Logue, Frank Logue, Leonard M. Adkins Publisher: Menasha Ridge Press January 17, 2007
I was very unhappy when I received this book. I have many hiking guide books and they all have been useful. This book won't be at all. There are no maps even remotely helpful, no good directions to the trailhead, no good info on shelters, campsites, no good info on trail difficulty/rating ... I have other hiking books of specific areas, like North Carolina, the Northeast, Virginia... They all... more

| 7. Walking the Blue Ridge: A Guide to the Trails of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Third Edition |
|
By: Leonard M. Adkins Publisher: The University of North Carolina Press September 26, 2006
My wife and I have just come home from a 3 week trip along the entire parkway. We started the trip with Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway, but ended up buying Walking the Blue Ridge at one of the visitor centers. While Hiking was ok, we found Walking the Blue Ridge to be the better of the two. It was very easy to use, easy to find information, and full of wonderful tidbits. The way the mileage data was... more

By: Leonard M. Adkins Publisher: Countryman May 09, 2007
If only this book was laid out like Hiking In VA. The maps are not as good, and there are no elevation profiles, but the hikes and their descriptions are wonderful..
I have utilized this book with the Hiking VA book to come up with some exceptional hikes.. I recommend the triple crown hike #33, But do Dragon's Tooth as a day hike. Park on 624 and do the 5 mile round trip. If you have... more

By: Leonard M. Adkins Publisher: Menasha Ridge Press February 01, 1998
There are tons of "I Hiked the Appalachian Trail" books, and just as many "How to Hike the Appalachian Trail" books, but this is the only one that tells (and explains) what you are going to see while you're out there. Why does a particular flower grow here and not there? What kind of forest am I walking through? How can I tell the difference between bear scat and fox scat? Why are there no trees on... more
