| 2. Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems (Modern Library Science) |
|
By: Galileo Publisher: Modern Library October 02, 2001
It's not the most alluring of titles, I admit, and even though most people have heard of Galileo and many know enough of his achievements to admire him, I suspect few people would consider reading a book by him. However, I urge you very strongly to buy this book and at least give it a try. It's a wonderful work, full of fascinating and brilliant insights and Stillman Drake's superlative translation... more

| 3. Discoveries and Opinions of Galileo |
|
By: Galileo Galilei Publisher: Anchor April 01, 1957
My interest in Galileo was recently piqued by a seminar on data presentation by Edward Tufte (strongly recommended, also his books.) I was looking for an overview of Galileo's work and some context. This book provides both, very well.
The book provides long quotations from "Siderius Nuncius" (Starry Messenger), Letters on Sunspots, The Assayer, and Letters to the Mother of the Grand... more

| 4. Sidereus Nuncius, or The Sidereal Messenger |
|
By: Galileo Galilei Publisher: University Of Chicago Press April 15, 1989
Everyone interested in Astronomy should buy this edition of this classic little book, it's a quick read. Galileo's text conveys his excitement as he is telling people what he's seen with his new instruments, and you can sense his joy as he explains to the philosophers, academics and clerics that he now knows, knows and can prove (!), that the world is very different from what they have... more

| 7. Dialogues concerning two new sciences |
|
By: Galileo Galilei Publisher: General Books LLC August 17, 2009
Galileo's "Dialogue Concerning Two New Sciences" covers the basics of what is today called classical mechanics. His main topics are the cohesion and strength of materials, uniform and uniformly accelerated motion, and projectile motion. But I also appreciate Galileo's tangents: his thoughts about infinity, the speed of light, vibrations, music, and his bouncing up against the concepts of Calculus... more

| 8. Two New Sciences and Drake's History of Free Fall |
|
By: Galileo Galilei Publisher: Wall & Emerson, Inc. September 15, 2000
Very briefly: this book is the authoritative English translation of Galileo's masterpiece, after a long history of notoriously poor and incomplete translations. Some people have apparently had problems with the binding. I have had no such problems. My copy is well-worn from study, and the pages are still securely in the binding.
