| 1. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: The Complete BBC Radio Series |
|
By: Douglas Adams Publisher: BBC Audiobooks America October 14, 2008
Where I work H2G2 (Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy) is fairly popular and I have been told time and time again that I must read this book. Well, I finally read it. Overall it's not quite as good as I hoped, but still it was an interesting read.
H2G2 is about an Earthling named Arthur Dent who is saved right at the last second by his friend from a planet near Betelgeuse, Ford Prefect... more

By: Douglas Adams Publisher: Del Rey April 26, 2005
The hitchhikers trilogy is great, just read all of the other hundreds of reviews. I would just recommend getting The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (or the hardcover The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide Deluxe Edition ) it has all five books in one and an extra short story and cost much less than buying the books separately... more

| 3. The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy |
|
By: Douglas Adams Publisher: Del Rey April 30, 2002
Highly imaginative, hilarious (in that British humour, random/absurd/ridiculous sort of way), and action-packed. The ending leaves a bit to be desired, the overall structure is fairly haphazard (understandably given the original story source) and the characters are not as fleshed out or as personally appealing as I'd prefer. Sometimes Adams blathers on a little bit TOO much. But the other aspects ... more

| 4. Life, the Universe and Everything |
|
By: Douglas Adams Publisher: Del Rey April 26, 2005
This is another fine tale from Douglas Adams, taking us on wild adventures with Arthur, and the rest. The difference in this one is that Arthur is finally starting to actually do things. rather than jsut standing around saying what. In this one we get to see Arthur and Trillian save the universe, and we learn to fly, which was my favorite part of the novel. The key is to throw yourself at the ground... more

| 5. So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish |
|
By: Douglas Adams Publisher: Del Rey March 29, 1999
This is the story of the woman, Fenchurch, who had a revelation about the meaning of life the day that the world ended, and her relationship with one Arthur Dent, who suddenly discovers that the Earth wasn't destroyed after all. Douglas's characteristic, brilliantly clever and hilarious prose is fully in swing, making this another delicious book in the series. Grade: A... more

| 6. Mostly Harmless |
|
By: Douglas Adams Publisher: Del Rey February 01, 2000
I read HHGG many years ago, but never got around to Mostly Harmless when it came out. I saw it at the library the other day, and knew I had a quest to finish. Unfortunate.
Instead of the cutting wit of the first stories, we get Jerry Lewis-esque slapstick, and Dr Seuss-like silly word play. The plot rambles and bumbles, but unlike the comedic diversions of its predecessors MH just fades... more

| 8. The Salmon of Doubt: Hitchhiking the Galaxy One Last Time |
|
By: Douglas Adams Publisher: Phoenix Audio January 01, 2006
The Salmon of Doubt begins with one of the funniest pieces of writing I have ever come across. Preceding The Introduction to the New Edition, The Introduction to the Introduction to the New Edition (I2I2NE), written by comedian, actor, author, Monty Python troupe member and long time Adams friend and collaborator Terry Jones, sets the tone for what is to follow: comedy at its best; pages filled with... more

| 9. Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency |
|
By: Douglas Adams Publisher: Pocket June 01, 1991
I can't say I really enjoyed this book as much as his other works. The story was something he would write about, and he filled it with that awfully hilarious humor he is known by so well, but he made it terribly obvious he hated God and religion in general, and I couldn't stand it. So read it if you can ignore his agenda in the book or if you agree with his beliefs, but otherwise, just stick with Hitchhikers... more

| 10. Science: The Definitive Visual Guide |
|
By: Dk Publishing Publisher: Dorling Kindersley Publishers Ltd October 01, 2009
As with other DK books, this one is absolutely beautifully illustrated, so it should be engaging for kids, as well as a pleasant coffee table book for adults to browse during weekend afternoons.
The book is organized historically rather than by subject matter. Of course the upside is that you can get a sense of the sequence and timing with which scientific ideas emerged. But the downside... more
