By: Donna Leon Publisher: Atlantic Monthly Press 2009-04
Another excellent book in this wonderful series. I don't know why it is not better kknown in the US. Each book has a different aspect of Venitian and Italian culture mixed into the story. The books are well written and the series has the smoothest transition between books of any series I have read. There is hardly any of the akwardness of introducing new readers to the characters that one finds... more

| 4. The Girl of His Dreams |

By: Donna Leon Publisher: Penguin (Non-Classics) April 07, 2009
No surprise that Donna Leon's novels aren't translated into Italian. Nobody would care reading them, in fact. We are used to REAL crime novel, not to a dull description of a common week in a Questura. And there's something worse about it: Ms. Leon keeps on making Italian characters speak her own prejudices and wrong ideas about Italians (Italia=Mafia, pasta, pizza, racism), why doesn't she create an... more

By: Donna Leon Publisher: Penguin (Non-Classics) September 25, 2007
This book never clicked with me. It combines a pedestrian murder mystery with some feminist (or at least female-centered) themes. Commissarion Guido Brunetti is the main man, a high-level police detective in Venice. He is taciturn, smart, and unrealistically bookish for a policeman (well, this is a novel). He enjoys a fairy tale home life with his wife, the well-born Paola, and 2 kids. In... more

First Sentence: There was nothing much to notice about the field, a hundred-metre square of dry grass below a small village in the foothills of the Dolomites.
On the recently purchased property of a doctor near the Italian Dolomites is found the much decomposed body of a young man. Near it is a ring bearing the crest of the Lorenzonis, one of Italy's most aristocratic families, whose... more

By: Toni Sepeda Publisher: Grove Press 2009-04
For any Donna Leon and Guido Brunetti fan, this book is a must for a visit to Venice. I was unsure about the setup, as Sepeda states she is trying to write for the "armchair reader" at home as well as someone walking around Venice. I used the book while I was physically in Venice, so I can only comment to that side. I hadn't realized how confusing and difficult Venice is to navigate, so I found... more

| 9. Death in a Strange Country (Commissario Guido Brunetti Mysteries) |
|
By: Donna Leon Publisher: Penguin (Non-Classics) December 30, 2008
Death in a Strange Country is a richer, faster paced, and more satisfying novel than the first in the series, Death at La Fenice. It involves the investigation into the death of an unidentified man found floating in a canal in Venice. As the book progresses, we learn that the man's death was tied to a very large American military base in northern Italy, and that his death will not the only one.more

By: Donna Leon Publisher: Penguin (Non-Classics) August 25, 2009
In this installment of the adventures of her delightful creation, Guido Brunetti, Donna Leon adds further depth to his character. She also serves up a harrowing conclusion to a brutal double murder--but I am getting ahead of myself, let's set the stage.
In the insular setting of the island of Pellestrina, a place where resident fisherman and their families compete for dwindling fish catches... more
