| 1. Essential Dr. Strange, Vol. 3 (Marvel Essentials) (v. 3) |
| By: Steve Englehart, Frank Brunner, Marv Wolfman, Roy Thomas, Jim Starlin, Roger Stern, Stan Lee, Jim Lawrence, Dan Adkins, Denny O'Neil, Gene Colan, Alfredo Alcala, Rudy Nebres, Al Milgrom, Tom Sutton, Steve Ditko, George Tuska By: Frank Brunner, Jim Starlin, Dan Adkins Publisher: Marvel Comics January 09, 2008
This volume collects the first 20 odd issues of the Dr. Strange's second headliner title and it's a bit of a mixed bag. The book starts out strong with classic stories by Steven Englehart and artists Frank Brunner and Gene Colan. Englehart had an amazing ability to balance both thrilling action with cosmic psychedelia. Even when the stories begin to veer into hyperbolic profundity, he grounds it... more

| | 2. Essential Doctor Strange, Vol. 2 (Marvel Essentials) |
| By: Roy Thomas, Dan Adkins, Gene Colan Publisher: Marvel Comics March 23, 2005
The Marvel Essential series puts monochrome versions of its comic-book series in trade paperbacks. These provide the "essential" artwork and the stories.
Doing any story about a real magician (i.e., one who wields actual magical forces) is difficult, as anything can happen in such stories, particularly in comic books. The Doctor Strange character is even more difficult to handle, as... more

| | 3. Essential Sub-Mariner, Vol. 1 (Marvel Essentials) (v. 1) |
| By: Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, Raymond Marais, Archie Goodwin, Wally Wood, Gene Colan, Jack Kirby, Jerry Grandenetti, Bill Everett, Dan Adkins, Werner Roth, Marie Severin, John Buscema Publisher: Marvel Comics September 30, 2009
The stories are the usual mix melodrama, angst and adventure the usual inconsistencies, and repetitiveness of the stories that seems to be in large part from a much of the run being the shorter half-issue format, as the comic at the time was split between two characters. I take off stars because the great Gene Colan's art being destroyed by horrible inking by Vince Colletta, and don't reproduce very... more

| | 4. Essential Classic X-Men, Vol. 2 (Marvel Essentials) (v. 2) |
| By: Roy Thomas, Gary Friedrich, Arnold Drake, Werner Roth, Jack Sparling, Dan Adkins, Ross Andru, Don Heck, George Tuska, Jim Steranko, Barry Smith, John Buscema Publisher: Marvel Comics May 31, 2006
Not long after the comics reprinted in this volume, the original X-Men comics series was canceled. From reading this volume I think I can see at least part of what the problem was. There is almost no consistency to the creative team with artists and writers changing from issue to issue. Our heroes face mostly unmemorable foes and the appearances by the big names bad guys (Magneto, Juggernaut) aren't... more

| | 5. T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents Archives, Vol. 6 (Archive Editions (Graphic Novels)) |
| By: Dan Adkins, Reed Crandall, Steve Ditko, Gil Kane, Chic Stone Publisher: DC Comics February 01, 2006
This brings an end to the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents' Archives series from DC.
Masterminded by the great Wally Wood in the 60s, the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents' series, with its heroes Dynamo, Noman and others were never quite a match for DC's Superman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern and others, nor Marvel's Fantastic Four, Spider-man and Avengers.
Nevertheless, for a young boy who found... more
