I was pretty depressed at the overall tone of volume 12. There was a lot of introspection, and the club was split up in various places, so a lot of the humor that springs from the twins goading Tamaki, or Kyoya goading Tamaki, was missing. The Ouran High School Host Club manga, I'm pleased to say, is as wonderful and laugh-out-loud funny as the anime. I'm eagerly collecting the volumes as they are published in English now, and though some storyline details have been changed slightly, I recognize plot lines that were used in anime episodes that I have watched. It's true that what originally drew us all in was the comedy and oddness of it all. A host club at a rich kids school with Haruhi thrown into the mix. But every good story needs good character development and I think Bisco Hatori did a great job in doing that and furthering the story.
